A/C Manifold Gauge Set question

I have a set of gauges from Harbor Freight. I've had them for a couple years now, and have never been able to get them to work properly. One thing that is confusing me is the yellow lead. It seems as though the end that attaches to the manifold is open, while the other has a valve like you see on a wheel valve stem.

Well, neither my vacuum pump nor the included attachment for the refrigerant have fittings that would release the valve and allow flow. It would seem the fittings were wrong, but the gauges on every video I have watched on youtube are set up the exact same way. I don't know if I am missing something simple, if the valve isn't working right or what.

Any suggestions?
