C6 tranny

i have a 390 cid witha c6 tranny, my question is this.....i need to find a speedometer gear that is metal and will fit this tranny. it is worn out, it is not a nylon gear. i took it to a transmisson shop here in town and they said it might be hard to find with out going to a junk yard. oh and how can you tell what the tranny is? just in case i do have to goto a junk yard

with a 390 you will have a c6 so any c6 gear will work You need to keep in mind your rear gear ratio too as the gears are different for different rear ratios. if you want to change trannys you will need one off a fe as the fe has its own bell housing bolt pattern.
also if you look at 4x4 the gear is in the transfer case if im remembering right due to the short tail shaft. you will probably have better luck looking into older 2 wheel drive trucks or maybe hi po cars? i don't really know what application would call for a metal gear. oops i missed the second part of the question. the c6 is used on all big block engines that came with autos and on some small blocks but id stick to big block engines to reduce miss identification. it has a unique pan shape and a 1 piece housing minus the tail shaft.( non removable bell housing) it has 17 pan bolts i believe.
