caddy 1995 sedan deville 4.9 L - 4t60e + broken tranny +

transmission drives only on first gear when selector is D-3-2 or 1, no reverse,
park ok, vacuum modulator works - no leak, oil level ok, small grinding noise in
park and neutral - noise stop on drive, car mileage only 97700, is there anything to test before trans takeoff ?

First, is this a Northstar car? If so, it's a 4T80E. None of the "E" transmissions (4T60E, 4T80E, 4L80E, etc) use a vac modulator any more, so I'm not sure what you mean by "vacuum modulator ok". Finally, are you sure the trans is stuck in first and not in second? The 4T80E and 4L80E use computer-controlled shift solenoids to operate the hydraulic valves inside the valve body. When there's a problem with one of the solenoids, the trans electronically locks itself in second. Replacing the solenoids is easy once you drop the pan. Just be sure to read any stored codes first to verify what the problem is.

sedan deville 4.9 L engine, about car speed and engine rpm it feels like first gear, it does not slip in that only gear, when push gaspedal down and get the speed up-next pedal up it goes like no gear on like N,small grinding noise in N and P-rear band broken or off the seat,

Joe, this car falls in the in between category.

It is a 4T60E, with a modulator, slighty later years the 4T60E became the 4T65E, with no modulator and electronic pressure control.

This trans, when in failsafe[no electric to trans], will be in 3rd gear.

This trans also has a no reverse condition.

Ozzie57, with this trans, a no upshift, 1st gear start and no reverse means that the reverse reaction shell has failed and will look like a twisted piece of metal when you see it. This would be your grinding noise.

Unfortunately ozzie57, this trans will require major work.

thanks for the advice,so there is not much to be tested before takeoff,
I have master kit de luxe on shelf waiting for.........., but maybe better to buy rebuild trans, there probably is so much junk inside the old one,and
buying hard parts one by one not so friendly to wallet,
car mileage is only 97700 all the way in good condition, too good for parts,
any idea a place to buy rebuild trans, I have seen some on ebay,my friend in FL can send it to europe,

Your welcome ozzie57. When that reaction shell tears up it usually does not mess up anything else.

So you could build this pretty cheap, more than likely.

forgot the modulator, I took that off and tested with vacuum,
it pulls in and dont leak, anyway I have rebuild earlier only those older
60-70`s transmissions which are much easier to work with.

Thanks. I'm much more familiar with the 4T80E, which does have the electronic pressure control. I also was not aware that Caddy still offered pushrod motors in 1995. Sorry for the confusion.

NoVA (Loudoun County to be precise). About about 30 miles west of Dulles Airport and about as far north as you can be and still be in the state of VA.

So Joe, you are close to Jefferson county w.Va.

I am in Woodbridge, Prince William county, Va.

You are in what I call God's country, very beautiful out that way.

Yup. More importantly, less than an hour from Mason-Dixon dragstrip.

Well, except for the rampant overdevelopment and resulting traffic. We were able to purchase a large enough farm that I can clutter the place up with projects and parts cars and the neighbors are far enough away that they don't complain. Just so long as I leave enough room for the wife's horses...
