4.9 is not a Northstar.
It was Cadillac's previous FWD engine. Was first 4.1, then 4.5, and then 4.9. Started in around '85/'87, went to 4.5 around '89, and 4.9 around '92 or '93, produced up until about 1995.
Northstar took over in '93 for some models with the 4.9 staying in production concurrently.
The 4.1/4.5/4.9 (usually called 4.x) were aluminum block and intake w/cast iron heads, cast iron cylinder sleeves. Standard pushrod engine but with roller lifters stock. Very durable engine when properly maintained. Decent torque and fairly lightweight. Not designed for performance, however - mostly for low-end torque, but not enough to blow out the FWD transaxles of the era.
Northstar and the olds version (4.0 - sometimes called "Shortstar") are all-aluminum with DOHC. Designed for much higher RPM usage than the 4.x. Fairly hot and efficient engine stock w/plenty of performance parts available.
