Cadillac 425/200-4r question

I am mating a 200-4r to a mild Cad 425 engine. I had to drill the flexplate to fit the torque conveter bolt pattern. And then while bolting things up, I noticed that there was roughly 1/4" to maybe a 3/8" gap between the torque converter and the flexplate. This is when the converter is pushed all the way into the trans. It just seems like this is little excessive and if I pull it all the way back to bolt the TC to the flexplate, I may not have a good engagement with the snout of the TC to the pump. Should I use spacers between the TC and the flexplate or am I worrying about nothing?
