Hmmm... I already mentioned that somebody dropped in a 3.8L supercharged v6, and they used a 5-speed froma cavalier and had to fabricate some motor mounts, fuel system, and transplant the engine, computer, and all of that stuff but that sounds like a more affordable option than a Northstar v8.
If I'm not mistaken some guy there also has one with a centrifugal blower from a late 80s or early 90s Bonneville. I always thought they had the roots type, but maybe I'm mistaken.
