cadillac rear axle?
i´m wondering if the Cadillac rear axle on my 1964 has any
interchangeble (spelling?) parts with any other GM axle?
I´d like to have a differential installed, but the ones for Cad.
are hard to find.
Does anybody now how strong these axle´s are?
I have 340 hp/480 ft.lbs now, and the engine i´m planning
to build have around 600hp/700 ft.lbs ...
How long will my rear end stay in one piece? :confused:
What´s the replacement axle? Ford 9" ?
I would also like to know if anyone has changed the front drum
brakes to disc brakes? Do newer Cad. brakes fit in some way?
I already have a vacuum servo made for disc brakes, so that
wont cause any trouble ... i realise (spelling?) that i need some
kind of valve to direct more "power" to the front wheels ..

I forget when the switchover actually occurred so I'll need to ask a question. Is this the early style where there is no rear cover? Basically you have to take the entire differential out from the front in order to check the gears and such.
Any 53 - 62 corvette differential will work or any 53 - 64 gm passenger car.
It is my understanding that these are not particularly strong rear ends. They are a 17 spline axle setup if I recall correctly. Your axles may not swap (length's varied), but the diff will. The one that came with my 55 was a 3.36 open setup. I replaced it with a 4.88 posi from a corvette.
I suspect you'll be fine for a while, but I'd take measurements while I was under the car just in case. I've witnessed one stand up alright to a 327 that was putting down a little over 500hp. It was fine for many months of straight abuse. However, when it did finally let go it was interesting to look at the pieces. I'd never seen an entire gear set turned to pieces no bigger than what you'd find in a cereal box (grin).
