Cadillac V12 historical photos caught my eye

Here's a story I found on Hemmings:

Success! Cadillac’s OHC V-12 engine photos found | Hemmings Blog: Classic and collectible cars and parts

Cool engine, cool story.

Very interesting, I knew they made the old flathead V-12 but never heard of these engines.

327NUT, 1930 through 1937 Cadillac V-12s and V-16s were OHV engines. The crankcase, cylinder banks, and heads were seperate pieces. It made for a very heavy engine!

You know....you're right, brainfart on my end, I was thinking about the Lincoln V-12. My dear old Dad had a '47 Cad with the 346" flathead V-8, kind of a wierd engine. From what I remember it was used in some WWII tanks, had the exhaust ports coming out of the top of the engine.

I've got a book,
American Horsepower American Horsepower
, that has pictures of that engine in it. Interesting note, that motor was so expensive to build GM lost money on every one. After a few years they designed a flathead V16 that used HALF the parts and made the same horsepower. Of course it was not nearly as pretty but it did make money.
