California Trip

Hi guys,
I will be traveling to Riverside CA to pick up a car in mid April and returning to WA via hwy 1 and 101 up the coast route. Have you any ideas on things to see on my way back home? I would like to stick fairly close to the planned route..

Sam

One of my favorite paces in the world is Cambria, Ca. it's on Hwy. 1 just north of Hwy. 46.....my Mom was born there in 1908. You pass through San Luis Obsipo, Morro Bay then about 45 min. or so to Cambria. If you get a chance stay at "San Simeon Pines Resort Motel" nothing fancy but it's near the beach. If you like steak and wine, eat at the "Old Stone Station" in town. Also I wouldn't travel up Hwy. 1 all the way to the bay area unless you're in ABSOLUTELY no hurry. Just too twisty and if you get stuck behind a gawker you're screwed. Solvang and Buelton are nice too on the way up......have a good trip.

OneMoreTime, I just got back on Tuesday night from almost the same trip. Down the I5 to Grants Pass (home of Bob Drake) then down the 101 through San Francisco to Monterrey. There the wife insisted on coasting down the 1 all the way to Morro Bay. 327NUT is right about it being slow, but it really is beautiful. Saw Grey whales spouting near Big Sur and Elephant seals near San Simeon. Found Eddies Custom Cars-You Dream It, We Make it Happen in Morro Bay. Eddie was very hospitable for the short time I was there. He's hosted some gatherings for the Metal forum guys.
Try not to look at the prices at the pump, just have fun!!
Alan

Hearst Castle is a must see, I've been there 4 times and still enjoy the tour. LOTS of stuff to do al the way up the coast! The Half Moon Bay car show is around that time, one of the best. Brian (martinsr) knows the area well, I am sure he will chip in. Monterrey with the cannery row and the aquarium, the 1 hiway is gorgeous to drive, Pismo, Morro Bay, wineries in San Luis Obispo, what do you like?

My wife and I just returned from Kauai in Feb.

I read a bumper sticker there that said "SLOW DOWN ... this ain't the mainland." and thought that to be so true.

We also found, quite often, that a road that has a "no exit" sign has some hidden treasures at the end of it ... so drive like you're on vacation.
