I am pulling my hair out working on a 93' ford e-250 with a 4.9l (300) 6cyl. It is running like El crappolla. If you feather into the throttle slowly in neutral it will rev up,but will die if you go much past 1/4 of the way rapidly.If you try to accelerate in drive it will die. At idle it is puking black smoke. I have another good running one that I have used for test parts. I have tried the MAP sensor, the air intake temp sensor,coolant temp sensor,the tps, the fuel pressure regulator. The distributor was replaced maybe a year ago with a Motorcraft. The plugs and wires aren't very old either I think we changed them same time as the distributor. It isn't missing at idle,has a slight skip as you bring the RPM up. Sometimes it will back fire out the exhaust REALLY loud. It is an ECC-IV system. Any ideas??? and I do mean any will be appreciated.thanks Brian

My first thoughts with the revving in neutral being allowed, but dying under load, and dying if you try to rev quickly, and most importantly the black smoke, is a very rich fuel mixture. My car acted just like that when the choke decided to come on after the car was warmed up. I know yours isn't carbureted, but that's what it sounds like.

It sounds like the injectors, or the computer assigning the fuel mixture, is the culprit here.

That's all I can guess for right now. Good luck, and tell us what happens.

I forgot to mention, maybe throttle body??? I'm not real definite on efi engines.
