Cam for 400 SBC

I've searched through the archives but didn't find what I was looking for. I am building a 408 for an 84 Monte Carlo SS. It has 3.42 gears and a 700r4 trans with a 2500 stall. The engine has hyper flat tops with 6cc dish, stock deck height, stock rods, stock goodwrench heads (ported) with steam holes drilled. My problem is with the pistons it has gives it a calculated 9.67:1 comp. ratio. Right now I have a Comp Xe262 installed in the engine but someone told me that my dynamic compression will be a tad over pump gas friendly. I'd like to be able to run pump gas, it would be nice it I didn't have to buy premium. Is this cam a mismatch? What would be better? Also the same person told me that the 400 doesn't need a 2500 stall and I'd be better off switching to a 2000-2200 stall. I would get better mileage and generate less heat. Do you agree? And what is something decent for less then $300. My intended purpose for the car is a cruising car that I plan to take to work a few times a week (nice weather days) which is 50 miles round trip.

xe274 all the way.

any loss in low end is countered by the stroke and gear. it would probably work best with a 2500 stall.

I know of a 406 sbc, with an Edelbrock RPM, camshaft in it. The thing had a killer idle to it, and a 2500 rpm stall in a 72 chevelle. Just my 2 cents

I am somewhat hesitant to go with a cam that large. I don't want something that is gonna kill driveability. I had a buddy with a 455 poncho and we put in a Ram Air Iv cam which has similar numbers and it did not idle well. It had about 12" vacuum in park and like 9 or so in gear. To me something like that is not what I am looking for. I want something that If I get stuck in stop and go traffic I can sit there in high 90 degree heat with the A/C on and not be rattled to death or overheat.
