cam button

I just bought a pete jackson gear drive used on e-bay for my 454. I am in the process of installing a 274/286 xtreme energy hyrdraulic flat tappet camshaft. Do I need a cam button with this setup? Doesn't the cam come with a taper ground into the lobes to keep it from walking? I thought you only needed a cam button with a roller cam. Any suggestions? It does have the bronze thrust washer that goes between the block and the cam gear. Can you use one without the other?

You don`t need a cam button. The lifters as well as the cam both have a crown.

The bad thing is that I didn't receive a thrust bearing or button and am wondering if I can get by without it due to the cam taper. I f i need it i'll find one but if i don't i can move on

Personally I wouldn't bother with the cam gears. I had them in for a day and a half. I couldn't get them out fast enough. Way too loud, and I didn't like the float on the gears. I checked them 3 times while they were installed and everytime the floating gears were bound up between the crank and cam gear. There is a recomended clearance in the idler and during installation it's possible to get, but once the engine is started they wedge and bind. Double roller is the only way to go. Maybe you'll get lucky, Good Luck!
