. Piston tops got to be beat to hell, pistons cracked, rod bearings squished, and valves bent from the description of other damages... metal in all bearings... oil pump gone, no oil pressure... real low quality shade tree mechanics...

. Good and bad parts available on eBay, so wouldn't blame them...

. I'm with the other guys, refuse to get into it any further unless you can at least verify the condition of the internals... your friend may have gotten rich from suing people he pushed around...

. As far as old cam size, who cares? If you're allowed to do it right, just put the proper size cam in for what it has... along with a whole new valve train...

. If engine is a 383 or larger, see if it has a reduced base circle cam...

. Could those heads with a 'W' on them possibly be stock GM Winters Foundry aluminum heads? (but should have casting numbers under valve covers)

. Yeah, I've never seen a cam with more than 1 or 2 bad lobes before...

Ive been building his cars for 20 years he is a collector with 3 pole barns full of cars + a five car garage Im working on the vette in also full, and I have Been doing the restoring on his classics that he puts money in and does RIGHT, He has 4 SB engines on stands already built, he has 4 sets of heads redone , If what he is trying to have me do doesn't work out , there is a dirty old claimer he wants to stick in the Vette a 383 ready and waiting that he baught cheep! He isn't restoring the Vette He is just playing with it LOL He cares no more about this car then you would about an old used sheet of toilet paper! Today he is talking about giving it away when its running ( All you say is true) Except the pistons tops look pristineThe push rods all have between .002 and .010 bend (and are being replaced, the heads 1 is .005 warp the other .004, I have redone world heads I can put on! He wants to use the aluminums the way they are! A new cam Kit will go in! Im figuring on a 460 to 490 lift and 218 or 224 duration is ball park for good street peformance!! It has an RPM intake and a big quick fuel carb he is going to reuse I told him the carbs too BIG, When I primed oil through the engine with a drill it read 45 LBS cold as I turned the crank , Timing chain ,true roller chain is like New! Comp roller rockers are all in very good shape! I'm no NOVICE and stated to him that it won't last long after its running LOL but he doesn't care! I don't care what he does I'm getting paid! And when I'm THROUGH LOL He will pay me to pull this thing and install another engine LOL He did the same thing He is doing now Before with a Riviera GS that another local repaired for him when I refused !! I had to Rebuild it after the fiasko I'm going over now to take pics if he is home! and I'll post them later!! I don't care what cam was in it anymore (but still curious) I will keep this thread going though to show what is going to happen LOL

Customs I've had from a few different manufacturers were either vibrating pencil etched or acid transfer etched, once hardened for grinding they are too hard to then stamp #'s into. There might be basic core #'s stamped, but actual grind #'s were etched

. That's amazing! When you said valve tips were mushroomed and edges flaking off and pushrods bent I figured there had to have been valve to piston collisions happening... unless the tips were ground down below the hardening to make them all even... I've never seen mushroomed valve tips.... surprised the rockers weren't damaged, either... unless the damaged valve tips happened by another valve train setup before the current rockers were put in... at least this guy isn't too cheap to have spare engines and parts laying around...

These heads were bought assembled new last winter 2012 and the engine was put together Jan. 2013 and the car was bought last fall 2013 so not a lot of hrs on the engine just one summer of weekend driving and track time! they used the old push rods so they may have already been bent when it ran the old (World) cast heads (they swollowed some valves) LOL So this engine is a new build that fell short to poor everything!!!!

I was told a little while ago the flat tappet cam is almost 550 lift by the old owner, as you can see even in these bad pics all the lobes are flattened out only one has any lift left and it isn't worth checking!! I ordered a 488 lift 220 duration cam kit today and will install it advanced and will order push rods later when I measure what I need! I told him as I was taking pics "Johnny I can't stand behind this ! Those heads should at least be re worked!!" Before we install them and he repllied: "I understand that But for this car Just get it running , Do the wireing , Fix the windows, repair all the vacume and get the light doors to open, and I'll park it in the back by the Willys" I even offered to buy the car but he won't sell it
He may give it to his Grand daughter in 10 years when she graduates

Ive never seen a cam with every lobe completly wiped out!!

I suppose you all have seen people like that LOL

Is it just the camera angle, or are all the springs set-up real tight?? Sure looks like they would coil bind with very little lift. Like someone put standard length valves in a head that needed +.100" longer valves.

Its the angle of the pics they are single spring and damper spring and when I looked at them there is a lot of space between the coils I also pushed the valves open with not much force with the palm of my hand so I would say not as much pressure as they should have! For the cam they said was in it!
