Cam endplay/which cover?

So I have a 1989 chevy 350 block that I'm building for performance. I got a comp cams 08-423-8 hydraulic roller camshaft. I'm reusing my stock lifters. How am I supposed to drive the crank gear on? I used a rubber mallet to hit a piece of wood and went around the gear and tapped until it looked like it was all the way on, but how do I know that it is all the way on? Also, I need to order a timing chain cover. What kind should I get that doesn't cost money, but looks good enough, with a chrome finish? And what do I do the check camshaft endplay? Thanks for you help.
