The 2000 stall and 2.73 gears limit the amount of cam duration to around 218-222 @.050 max.

the edelbrock RPM cam will not work with a 2000 stall. Needs a 3500 stall and
4.10's minimum.

Here is a great pump gas 400SBC street machine combo using your flat top 400.
needs a 10" "3500 stall " and 4.10 gears.
406 flat top pistons.
WP 200cc Sportsman II 72cc heads or Dart Iron Eagle 200cc or 215cc 72cc platinum series heads.
Or 70cc chambered Edelbrock Performer RPM heads
Comp cams XE284H-10 #12-250-3 hyd cam
Edelbrock Performer RPM manifold +750cfm carb
1-5/8 long tube headers 2.5" dual exhaust.

Don;t forget to hang on tight....

If you just got to stay with a 2000 stall converter, a Isky #201271 270H mega cam or Crane #10013 energizer 278H is the biggest I'd go with.
Either of these, can benefit from 1.6 ratio rockers.

In a 406 ci w. 9.5:1, I would have no problems whatsoever running that larger Edelbrock cam. Especially with a 4.10. I would have a problem with it if you had stock 400 heads.

If you do have stock heads, go with the Comp Xtreme 268. I had one in my 327 with 9:1, 462 heads and a 3.23 in my 67 chevelle. Didn't exactly burn the tires off the car but it ran fine (stock converter too).

If you are looking for the exact same cam for probably a 1/3 of the price, go to enginekits.com or competitionproducts.com, they have a similar Elgin cam and lifters for $89. Elgin is America made. Just look for the same lift figures.
