Cam question

hey guys I have a custom grind cam in my bbc that when I tore down the motor I noticed it has little bit of chewing on the dist. gear I've since then bought a bronze gear my ? is is the cam still useable it looks like it ate in about maybe half the thickness of a fingernail

I'd like to use this cam since one its a custom grind two it made my motor into an animal and three I got it real cheap from a friend that builds off shore race boat motors

You got it cheap cause its pooched. Any wear on the gear will surely bite into the soft bronze distributor gear. If you don't mind eratic spark timing and bronze filings all thru your motor, go for it. Stock up on some spare gears.
New hyd roller cams are not that expensive.

it was fine when I got it. running the motor for about 20 mins to set the lash and break in the lifters is what ate it up a little and its not a cheap hyd cam its a Jones custom grind solid roller

Check camshaft end play and distributor height. (intake manifold) and the oil pump. High oil pressure will put more stress on the distributor gear.
The cam can be repaired depending on what core it is.
"Street roller" cams have a pressed on section on the end. The distributor gear and last bearing journal are cast iron (like a flat tappet cam) and are pressed onto the end of a roller billet (street roller) if Jones Cams cannot repair it contact Crane Cams. The block can be modified to increase/direct oil flow to the cam distributor gear.

thanks I had heard that at one time but wasnt sure if it was true ( the repairable dist. gear ) I would think with the cost of a replacement of this cam it should have the pressed on gear I have to call Jones in the morning I choked when I talked to them about a replacement cuz it was in the ballpark of $850 for the same grind cam

Do you know the specs of this cam?
There are so many good off the shelf cams available that one will be very close.
If you do not know the specs you could find out the specs using your block and a degree wheel+ dial indicator or run the cam on a cam doctor.

Critical specs are duration @.020" duration @.050" duration @.200"
peak lobe lift, Lobe separation angle, intake valve closing point @.050" lifter rise. Rocker ratio and valve lash. With this information, I bet you can get a $270 to $350 off the shelf replacement that will make within 98% +/- power and torque.
A junk or defective harmonic balancer will also casue excessive distributor gear wear.
