which cam for a street/strip 383

As some of you mentioned i called about some cam recomendations.
here is what it's going in:
385cid (.040 over 383)
10.3:1 compression
i have a victor jr and a performer rpm intake
4779 750 DP
still up in the air whether to keep my DART 200cc iron heads or if i want to buy set of DART 215 cc pro 1's
TH350/ 3500 10" stall
4.10's with drag radials (29x10 slicks when i run it)
howards 1.6int/ 1.5exh roller lifters.
I will be buyng a set of directl lube lifters, likely Howards 91137 lifters

here are the solid roller cams:
110753-10 245/255 277/287 110 .600/.600 (3200-7400) Howards

111153-10 246/250 284/292 110 .582/.580 (2500-6700) Howards

12-771-8 242/248 280/286 110 .570/.576 (2500-6500) Comp

12-772-8 248/254 286/292 110 .576/.582 (3000-7000) Comp

i really dont want to spin the motor past 6500 rpm, and the techs recomended these cams. the Howards tech thought the 245/255 would best suit my set up. and the Comp tech thought the 248/254 would best suit my set up.

What do you think?

That 242-248 is going to be the ticket for that combo will make the power where you need it and if your lookng at a 6,500 red line this cam will have more usable power than the other bigger cams.
Personally that combo would love the cam im running in mine its a solid roller 243-249 @.050 with 585" lunati VooDoo solid roller its all the cam you'll need trust me heres quick vid of my engine getting timed. this thing revs real quick and is making great power.

And yep if your looking at heads check out pro-filers 210's the new big dog in the head market but if your a dart man you will not go wrong with the 215's pro 1 killer head aswel.

if you plan to drive it a good amount on the street then take it easy with the lift, as high lift reduces valve train life quickly. Is it worth a few more hp for a shorten valve spring life?

I would use the RPM intake. You need torque with 29 inch tall slicks and only a 4.11 gear. I would think you are working with a 3.73 gear when considering the height of the slicks. I'm thinking 130mph at 6500 rpm with that setup. What trap speed are you planing to run?

I would use the Dart 200cc heads since you already have them and the 12-771-8 242/248 280/286 110 .570/.576 (2500-6500) Comp cam. I would also do a little DIY bowl smoothing on the dart 200cc heads (especially on the intake side).

if MPG is any concern, use a vacuum secondary carb.

what weight is your car?

the heads have already had a good amount of "cleaning up" done to them, they were flow tested before and after and the after got about a 6% average flow gain from .300-.600" and a overall max gain of 11% at .600. MPG is of no concern for me this is just fun driver car, with some strip time. the car weighs around 3600lbs.

the current set up on the motor has a solid flat tappet cam with .525 lift and has been dyno'd at just under 500tq. (494)

as far as trap speed goes, she currently runs 11.60's @ 116mph and i'm running through the traps at around 5500rpm. and i'm running around 2900rpm at 60mph with the p295/65R15 drag radials on there. i really kinda of like the gears where they are and i wouldn't consider going higher in gear i would think about a set of 4.33's but not as low as 4.56's

i dont expect to see too much more out of this set up, the current set got me 512hp/494tq, if i can get 525hp/505tq with the new cam i would be happy. on thing i have to keep in mind is that i have a 3500 10" stall (really 3500-3800) and i am not replacing that stall as it cost 700.00. so the 2500-**** cams in this motor will really act more like a 21-2200-**** and only need around a 2800 or 3000 stall, the 3000-7000 cam will act more like a 2600-6600 cam and would still do fine with a 3500 stall.

i think i am leaning toward the 248/254 286/292 .576/.582 110 3000-7000 cam as after you take into account the 35 extra cube the 385 has over the 350 is will act more like a 2600-6600. the cam that i have in there now is a 3200-6400 and it acts more like a 2800-6000 cam.

I agree with PRO 48 fleetline, The lunati voodoo solid rollers are sick. I have the 60133 in my 383 with Airwolf heads. With the voodoo cam and profiler 210, afr 210s or Airwolf 220 heads you would be closer to 575-600HP. I dropped the carb and have mine on Fuel Injection now. It has a very snappy throttle.

For street use I like the Voodoo cams due to the low recommended lash settings. Leads to a little more longevity.

based on acutall flow tests done on a 4.030 bore, my 200cc dart platinum heads (after some work) are putting out what the AFR 210 competition heads are in the .300-.600" range and acutally have better velocity numbers at the lower lifts than the AFR 210 Comp heads.

and i seriously doubt that i would be in the 575-600hp range, as neither of these heads is honestly that much better (if at all) than the ones that i have nor than a set of worked DART 215 pro 1 (new platinum series). i would likely have to change my compression to the 11-11.5:1 in order to see those numbers

having spent some time at the machine shop where i have my work done and seeing atleast a dozen or so motors run on a dyno, you learn that what you or others are going to make, very often is very different that what they actually do. i bet i have seen 4-5 383-406 motors come in where the builder or owner thought it should make 500-525hp and once it was run it really came out to be like 450-480hp.
