cam suggestion from comp cams

what do you think of the cam comp cams suggested? it is 295th7 grind part number 12-602-4 intake lift .500 exhaust .486 duration @.50 intake 243 exhaust 257 lsa 107 I was running a erson 480 lift 230 duration 108 lsa. It is going in a 383 chevy flat top 2 valve relief pistons .000 piston to deck aluminum 210 procomp heads(I know I have read all the stuff about them but its what I have) they have been ported, I am running a edelbrock street tunnel ram with 2 500 edelbrocks a 10" 3000 stall converter with 3.90 gears msd ignition with a 6al.

Here, show 'em the specs......

I wouldnt use that cam in a 383.
why bother spending money to build a stroker and then use a hydraulic flat tappet cam with long duration and tight icl.It will have a lumpy idle,,,, and make fair hp

Gus's 40 09-26-2013 07:41 PM

I don't mind the lumpy idle and didn't really want to go through the heads and spend the money for a roller set up. It is for a 2500# hot rod

Gus's 40 09-26-2013 07:44 PM

what would you have in mind? the cam that was in it seemed to make fare power and pull good to 6000rpm I was just weighing my options

vinniekq2 09-26-2013 08:00 PM

I would use a mild roller hydraulic with a wider LDA and shorter duration. Not gonna make much power with 500 cfm carbs. should be fun in a light weight car.

1500-5600 Fair idle, good all around performance. Good vacuum. Computer compatible with chip.
how does something like this sound to you? you could add a couple degrees duration if you want more RPM?The 550s wont breathe that high up so keep the cam mild

Gus's 40 09-26-2013 08:30 PM

doesn't sound bad, with the erson cam that was in it 230@.050 292 advertised 108lsa sounded really good and would like to keep the aggressive sound and seemed to run real strong to 6000, I was a little leery about quite a bit more duration and tighter lsa that the comp site recommended, do you think I would be better off with even less duration and moor lsa then what I was running?

vinniekq2 09-26-2013 08:51 PM

cams are quite complex.I like a tight lda cam for small engines.as the engines get bigger I widen the LDA,,,just my choice/ The cam in my current car is square
108 lda and,,,
108 icl
the engine is 434 inch and makes peak power @ 6500 rpm
how do you like your powerband?
what about idle? some people buy cams for the sound,IE:

I built a 408 sbc with 11.7-1 comp., 200cc ported heads, edelbrock dual quad air gap with dual 500cfm eddy carbs that were converted for E85 fuel. My current cam is custom ground from comp, hyd. flat tappet, nitride hardened, .575 lift, 246/250 duration @ .05 on a 106 lsa 4 degrees advanced. My 500cfm carbs work GREAT. Bigger carbs may work better. I was told my cam will not work on the street. It works super. My converter is 3800/4000. The rear gear is 4.56 with 30 inch slicks. This is in my 32 ford coupe. I wish I went a little bigger on the cam and carbs.... My car is a screamer. Go with the bigger cam AND STICK WITH A TIGHT LSA for your 383, 106-108 would be cool. I also grooved the lifter bores for cam oiling and run a hard faced gm lifter. Tight lsa is like a light switch and a wide lsa is like a dimmer switch as far as the power curve goes. I know a bunch of dorks that told me the tight lsa on my cam would make the power curve peaky and that it would drop power off quick after it peaks. I turn the motor to 7000-7200 from time to time and cannot feel any power loss driving my hot rod. A wide lsa will make 383 motor feel lazy... I am swapping cams this winter to a 254/260 duration this winter and going to try two 750's on E85...

feeling power?

you need to feel horse power on a dyno, not your butt!lol.
If I took yo u for a ride in my car,you wouldnt feel the power rolling over at 6500 rpm,you would just be hanging on.
My engine makes peak HP @6500 and still makes great power @6800

vinniekq2 09-26-2013 10:37 PM

this engine has 227 dart heads/roller cam and single 950

Gus's 40 09-27-2013 04:48 AM

like I said I really liked the idle of the last cam, its a fender less hot rod and wanted a loppy sound and was pretty satisfied with the performance it did feel like more then I had expected after I got it all dialed in. The motor now is at the machine shop being reworked and I was planning on having them tune this one on there dyno. After miles of messing with the last one and learning allot about it, it will be cool to see if I was very far off and what the motor is actually capable of. I appreciate the feed back you guys are always very helpful

F-BIRD'88 09-27-2013 12:23 PM

That cam would not be ny first choice. Neither would the Procomp heads.
It will be interesting to see how much power it makes on the engine dyno.
Post your dyno sheet results when you get there.

Tunnel Rams are cool. Good luck.

Gus's 40 09-27-2013 01:04 PM

I will post when I get done, I'm not expecting great things by any means I do know what I have.I am looking forward to the dyno session and tuning it to see all the difference and how close or far off I was with the tune from what I thought was good
