Post Camaro 5 speed transmission, how strong?

I am considering swapping my M-21 Muncie for the camaro Transmission - 5-speed manual with overdrive, to make the car more drivable on the highway. The engine produces about 450 hp (sbc), car (55 chevy) weighs 3000 lbs, rear end is a 9" with 410 gears. How would this transmission stand up. I do periodically abuse it.

I don't think that would be a wise choice unless you heavily modify the tranny. They did not offer the 5 speed on the 350 cubic engines (only on the 305) in irocs because they could not handle the stock torque and hp. Your engine puts out well above that if the numbers are correct.

I agree 100% very weak tranny unless its been built. Putting that in anything more than a 305 is asking for headaches

i can understand you wnat some more gears that the 4 in the muncie, but if i were you i would save up and get a T-56 from a latemodel camarro. they are very stout trannies and will handle even a big block, and they are double overdrives

Never had a problem from mine running about 400 horse and 380 ft-lbs torque. I've raced it only a few times on G tech meter. I do drive it on the street everyday. I even use the six bager trans. All I ever hear They won't stand up so there ya have it.
