camaro t5 or auto?

Hey guys I have an 89 camaro I'm building for street/strip. It came stock with an automatic tranny but I baught a borg warner t5 manual I'm planning to install. My question is was this a stupid idea? I've recently read that the t5's suck for high performance. I was planning to completely rebuild it along with upgrading clutch etc..I'll have somewhere around 450-500hp when its completed and my rear end is a custom ford 9" posi with 4.11 gears. Will the t5 work or did I make a bad choice?

The T5 won't last long if driven hard at that power level. GM only put them behind a 220 hp at best 305, and concluded the T5 didn't have enough strength for use behind a 350 and so they never offered a 350/T5 combination.

Thanks for the reply. Man thats what I was affraid of. I should have done
my homework before I spent the money. I have the 700r4 auto that came with it would I be better off with it? Or should I invest in something else entirely? Bad thing is when I had the rearend built the guy custom made
a drive shaft and traction/torque bar that bolts to the t5 tranny.

If youre going to hammer it, you're left with a few options. Especially because you don't list what you bought exactly. a NON worldclass trans out of an S10 is useless to almost everyone except for the tailhousing setup. A World Class GM unit is worth reasonable money and its a STELLAR transmission, probably one of the best ever in terms of doing exactly what it was designed for...300hp 300ft pounds of TQ in stock trim

There is a GForce version of a T5 but its spendy. You could get a 3650 and change it over to a GM Input etc and have your own TKO (or buy one); or you can spring for the T56. Or you can stick a 4spd in a 3rd gen. OR you can rebuild the 700 and put a manual VB in it

Cool, thanks for the input autogear. My manual t5 is a borg warner out of a 84 trans am V8 is what the guy told me. I'm not sure if its world class or non world class yet I haven't researched the numbers. I got all the pedals, shifter and everything for it as well with the deal. I baught it in 2006, paid $500.

If hes correct its a non world class unit and probably worth something to the 3rd gen community (thirdgen.org) or the street rod community as a core.
