Camaros and Firebirds?

Are they really gone? Does anyone know what they will be replaced with? I'm just curiouse and this cat has 6 lives left so I thought I'd ask. The fact that they've been around since the late 60's to compete with the mustang and now they are history and the mustang is still around is puzzling. Does GM have something up their sleave or in their ars? Corvette is still there, but there isn't a car for the middle consumers anymore. Its either a cavalier or a Corvette, no happy medium.

GTO next year from pontaic.

Weimer 10-14-2002 08:22 PM

They are only going to be gone for 2(or 3) years.
Originally the were to be replaced with the SSR but everyone threw a fit so GM decided to bring them back.
That is what we were told at the Detroit Auto Show by the GM rep.
Later,
WEIMER

That GTO doesn't excite me, actually I think its ugly and they aut to be ashamed of themselves, but thats me. Now the original foam desighn with the burnt orange metalic paint was awsome but nooooo they had to go and frauk it up.

I agree with you there Faust. Seriously though, I doubt GM will keep these cars gone for very long. Perhaps they will come back in with a bang though! Can you say 8100????

Madd Syntst 10-15-2002 01:27 PM

Yes, but when they return, wll they be nice rides or rice rides?

Anyone beside me like the Dodge truck commercial when the guys in the car ask if its a hemi?

Halloweenking 10-15-2002 01:39 PM

Yes, cool comercial. What are the guys asking if its a hemi driving, I've only seen the comercial once and I didn't get a goodnuff look.

I usually don't read Hot Rod, but did anyone see the issue where they put that Hemi in a new Dodge Ram? I think it was the May or June issue. It actually looked really good.

In my opinion as a car lover..hotrodder...american..GM has slapped me in the face, how dare they mess with americana like that..my 2 cents JT

Couple greasy kids in a Duster pull up to this fella in a new Dodge Ram towing a Charger on the trailer. Kids go "is that a Hemi", fella goes "yep"...then the light changes and he takes off and leaves the Duster. Next light they pull up and the guy goes "oh, you mean the Charger? Its got a Hemi, too!"

That commercial is SO cool. Kudos to Dodge. I saw one of the new Hemi Rams and the badges are cool in theirself.

As far as the F-body, I think they are coming back in 2004. The new GTO is based on the Holden Monarro out of GM Australia. Its got the same LS1 in it.

Hold up. Are you saying they put a Hemi in a Dodge Ram?! No way! Maybe Dodge should think of doing that...wait, they already do!

1meancuda 10-15-2002 07:19 PM

Wait a minute, now that I think about it, maybe I should actually read articles rather than look at the pictures and captions! ;)
Anyway, I don't keep up on what companies are doing with their new vehicles. Thanks for the correction BigBlockBabe (not to mention the humbling... )!!

Croz 10-15-2002 09:18 PM

lol, they could call it a Dodge "they already do that" Ram.... hehehe... anyway, I agree about the GTO, i am disappointed in thier choice. I liked that concept back in 99, i even have a plastic model of it. Looks a lot better than the Monaro, but maybe it will perform. Truthfully, i didn't like the path they were taking Camaros and Firebirds, they were getting too much like a vette, low to the ground and all. I would like to see them spend a few years designing them and come back with something that is closer to a muscle car feel. Up off the ground, i can wipe my tail at home in my bathroom, i don't need it to drag the ground as i drive.

Halloweenking 10-15-2002 09:33 PM

Croz you can forget that idea. Because of fuel economy, aerodynamics and handling capabilities you aren't going to see another true production muscle car. I just want to see a cool car with personality and individuality, I don't care if its production fast, that I can do at home, but please make it cool and distiguishable.

I love that commercial. A discussion with the wife about hemis lead her to say "why don't you put one in the 36? hmmm........this one could break the bank , and a few other things too but oh so cool it would be.
the f bodies? make em rear wheel drive or it just won't be worh a dang....in mild terms. they'll be back.
