I have the engine together now and it is ready to go into the truck. Is the stock cam really that bad of a cam? I am putting this subject to rest now, I feel bad about this thread. I have been trying to get somebody to select a cam or send me in the right direction at least. I know it is hard to do because everyone likes different things.

Your stock "swirl-port" cam is like many stock emission compliant cams, it is a compromise. The OM has to deal w/emissions, fuel economy and driveability. The problem comes when the cam is changed and it is outside the approximate 10% window the ECM has available to it to compensate.
I don't know if there has been anyone here who has tried to match up an aftermarket cam to the stock heads and ECM you have. But likely, the intake duration would be at or below 200º @ 0.050", the exhaust perhaps 4º more. Lift would probably be in the low 0.400" range. Increasing the rocker ratio might get you a HP or five, if you feel you just have to do something. Clearances for the push rod to the head slot needs to be verified. |
