can anyone vouch for makita js1600 metal shear
Makita Shear Model JS1600JS1600
I saw a video of a guy using them and they seemed awesome, but I only saw him cutting a piece off a sheet. I'm wondering how well it would work to cut off a quarter and get your final cut right off the bat. Seems to be better than those scissor type power shears which only cut straight. This one actually cuts accurately around corners and bends, or so it seems. Just wondering if what I saw was for real and if someone can vouch for this shear or similar ones like it. Found one on ebay for $100!!! |
my milwaukee power shears do turns fine, and the head swivels..
sorry no help with the one you are looking at.. who told you the scissor type only cut straight lines |
the guy in the video, but he's a metal nut as well.

I have an old black and decker model 12, I was helping my son on his Rat 22 dodge lakester and he had marked out a pattern on some heavy metal shelving . I didn't see a tab welded on the back side and forced the shear, and broke the small thumb nail sized cutter die, They wanted almost $ 100 for that part including shipping, I said that's too much and bought a couple harbor freight knockoff's for less that $ 30 with the coupon's, it has worked good , the second one is still in the box.

yeah, the guy who recommended the shears also stated you should have two bead rollers...for 6 grand each. :D

looks like I found some air shears by AP for $15!!! What a deal. Thank god he spelled shears with two e's otherwise the russians would have had this on ebay already for x3 as much. What a score. These will be my work ones, still gonna get a plug in pair for the house for metal fab after I get my wheel and deep shrink.

The only power shears I have is a Milwaukee like these. They are a great tool but not very precise as far as delicate cuts. But damn for cutting out large sheets and stuff it rocks.

I'm sure the Makita shears are a fine product and will cut well.
I used the same type of shear, but Bosch, for many years in production of 18ga. steel automotive stampings. The Ford roof cutouts for sunroofs were all cut with Bosch shears. However, if you're only going to use them for hobby use, the Harbor Freight shears are hard to beat for the price of $29.95 on sale. Search YouTube for the video of the guy who bench mounted them for two-hand control of your metal when cutting. This type of electric throatless shear is the nuts for metal cutting in the shop.I tried the scissor type of 3 bladed shears, and was underwhelmed by their performance. Maybe for straight line cutting, the Milwaukee's are good, but for contour work, get the throatless type. |

yeah, not impressed with these shears. Will probably get the throatless but wait it out til I find a good deal on some.
I did however, get a good deal on other tools. $10 for this, and it works great! I already have the 317A but the one I just bought is the 317. Great deal! Buy Ingersoll Rand 317A Air High Speed Sander - 5" at SkyGeek.com Also got the older version of this for $10 and it's a beast! 1/2 hp motor! Item No: CP-CP-860 [Air Die Grinder] |
I have the model js1600 which I bought here down under for $580. It works for me just as good as it does for the guy in the video (that would be Lazze Janson from Pleasanton California). I use this all the time and it hasn't been sharpened or the blades changed since I bought it 3 years ago.

yeah, it looked like the cream of the crop in the video. Just missed out on one on Craigslist for $150. Should have gotten it. I guess I could get something cheap for now and keep an eye out for a used one. Never know what you can find at the swap meet.
