Can A Fake Convertable Top Be Removed?...
Hey guys, I wanted to know if those fake convertable tops can be removed cleanly. In other words, if I take the top off will their be adhesive stuck on the paint that I wont be able to get off? You know the kind of top I'm talking about, old people usually have them put on their cars. The top looks like the same material as a rag top.
I'm asking because I found a 95 Lincoln Mark VIII LSC with 51,000 miles for $3500. Thats about $1500 less than he should be asking. The guy says the car is in excellent shape, white body, black leather, and a black "fake convertable top". I would want to take that off the car.
Hopefully this is the correct forum, I figure with all you body shop guys in here a few of you have put these on and/or removed them.
ok, I found a picture, it's has a top like this: http://www.impalahq.com/Car_photos/photos/Canvas1.jpg
Odds are there is adhesive under it. Plus the padding stuff that holds moisture. Just like the Vinyl tops from years gone by.
I have always like the looks of a vinyl roof but seen too many rotted out roofs to trust buying one myself.
Anything is removable. There will be foam padding. There will be adhesive. What more do you want to know? Take a razor blade to it and see if you can start from the outer edged. Start at one corner and see where you get. You might get lucky and find the paint underneath is decent and just use some adhesive remover that is safe to use on painted surfaces. Try it on an inconspicuous place first. Hopefully it won't have trapped moisture and rusted the roof badly.
Price is probably reduced because everyone is looking for gas sippers. You can hardly give away an SUV or other large car these days to most people.
"Can" it be removed, of course. Can it be removed without repainting the roof, highly unlikely. I think that is what you are asking.
There are likely mouldings around the bottom that are screwed into the quarters, those holes will need to be filled as well. So count on painting the roof and quarters at the very least.
That is what I wanted to know.
Thanks for the information everyone.
