Back in the day I painted my '70 442 W30 a light blue metallic, while shooting it I got the brilliant idea to mix some silver flake into the Centari w/ hardener.
It looked really great while being sprayed, but once dried the flake had no sparkle, it looked like crap in the paint. Then came my first lesson in using a da to get rid of the mess

There are single stage metallic and pearl paints made specifically for that purpose. Here is an example (scroll down a bit on the page and you will see the SS option).

My sense is that these are not nearly as brilliant as pearl or metallic sprayed in clear over the top of a base color, but they do get some sparkle and depth. Also, these paints are made specifically to be applied this way. You can't really just add metallic to any old base color you buy off the shelf. You'll get about the same result as Old Fool got.

Another option is to shoot a pearl or metallic base coat and then shoot plain clear over the top of that. This is still one step short of a traditional pearl or metallic where the media is shot in an "inter coat" of clear over the top of the base color and then additional clear is shot over the top of the "inter coat". That (no inter coat) is the system I used for painting my sedan delivery shown here. The first pic is just after painting (no cutting or buffing) and the second pic is after cut and buff. This was a TCP Global/Restoration shop bc/cc as shown in the link above.

My experience if very limited, but I think this bc/cc system, or the single stage with metallic, is a good option for the novice or newcomer...but the trade off is you lose some of the brilliance and depth you get when you apply the metallic or pearl as an inter coat.
