Can I fit a C4 Transmission onto '55 Merc ?

Hi,

I have just purchased a '55 Mercury and was wondering if anyone knew whether I could fit a C4 transmission straight on. We dont have all the experts here in South Africa that you guys in America do, so any help would be great.

Is it a 256CI Y-BLOCK? The C4 will not go directly to the engine but an adaptor is available. Why the want for a C4?

Yes it is

Hi,

thanks for the reply - yes it is a 256. There is a C4 available, no other reason. What would you suggest instead, what would be better ? Also, any idea where I could get the adapter from ?

-FORD Y-BLOCK INFORMATION-

The adaptor is shown towards the bottom of the page. The C4 is a perfect upgrade if the price of the adaptor doesn't cause heart palpitations.

The MERC-O-MATIC is a tough trans...heavier than the FORD-O-MATIC. Guess parts are hard to find there for it. A later M-O-M with a tranny cooler (yours should be air-cooled) or even upgrading yours to an FMX.
