Scary, but I have seen it done. Make sure bolts are tight and go all the way in the carb base holes. I have seen big block with standard trans done this way. I use sling and 4 chains when ever I can.
I like to grab them somewhere more substantial. This one I used a HF leveler (worked great) and lifted at the front and rear of each head. Used a nylon block as a cushion against the aluminum surfaces.
Harbor Freight load leveler for the win.
The other option is chuck an iron manifold on it, but recently there was a guy online who said his cheap lift plate broke; so that scares me with a 700r4 and the engine itself.
Not in my shop, I consider this pretty risky. I've seen it done but when you consider that your hanging nearly a half ton on four 5/16ths bolts into an aluminum casting, well it makes mine pucker.
Lubriplate 105 has served me well for 20-yrs on lots of stuff; not just as a petroleum based engine assembly lube.
Lubriplate 105 is also one of the approved assembly lubricants for modern Tremec gearboxes, says so on the factory supplied Bill-of-material "ET-M-85 Lubriplate 105 (White)"
Gotta look at the can, think it's for lathe centers. I wipe it on when I use the leveler, wipe most off when I'm done so it won't attract grit. The whole dealie lives in a box with a good hardware assortment.
I was concerned about this myself (also had an issue of trying not to damage polished surfaces), so I made some plates that bolted to the Exhaust Ports (with ears for Chains) and used that Leveler-worked great, and I didn't pucker-
I used to use an iron manifold and lift-plate to put the long block in the car, then switch to the correct manifold, stab in the distributor and go. But the load leveler is SO much more precise and manageable. My old man used 2 chains bolted corner to corner, but occasionally the hook would slip on the chain. He also used a "come-along" LOL
I've used those 4 aluminum intake bolts to install a Ford 460/trany combo with no issue. It was pucker the whole way, but worked. I think the combo was around a 1000 lbs.
