Rule of thumb is as long as car does not leave both or garage
than clear can be applied anytime.
If the lacquer is a sold color you can sand with 600 before clearing but not metallics.
Its been a long time but if you have not bought the clear yet
PPG High performance was one of the best.
RM (Basf) had a good one -can't remember the name.
Dupont's clear buffed like cement.
The nice thing about lacquer you could do about anything you wanted with the big exception of going to a faster thinner on the next coat. Some people buffed the last coat of color than shot the clear on custom work.
Most of us painters from back than are dead from liver failure because of the lead content.
