Can Missing a Shift Cause a Rear Seal to go Bad???
Hey guys, sorry for the long title. I recently got the rear bushing and seal on the tranny, an M-21 Muncie, replaced and when I was changing the oil today, I noticed fluid leaking from that area again. I missed a shift yesterday and was wondering if that could have caused this problem to re-occur? Or is it just that the repair job was not as good as it needed to be? Thanks for any help...

if missing a gear caused a muncie to leak i'd be the major share holder in a gear oil company, the repair probably isn't sealing up. Did you replace the worn yoke when the bushing was replaced?

I would tend to look at the repair too, if the yoke was worn whoever replaced the bushing and seal should have brought that to your attention (unless you just took the tailshaft somewhere). Not to criticize people in the business, but having worked in it for many years, I know that there are some less than professional that may not have replaced the bushing even if you instructed them to. I've seen it, the lazy ones will say it didn't need it and the dishonest ones will charge you for it figuring you'll never know.

yeh, I'm weary of the worn yoke idea since I had one mech. tell me he thought it was worn, but the other barely mention it and say that it was decent last he saw. And I did not really think that a missed shift would cause the prob., its just that was the only time it did it was after that. Thanks for the replies guys.

I don't know if you took it to a trans shop or not, but if not, they probably didn't have the right tool to install the rear bushing. Most shops won't have a bushing driver that is long enough to install that bushing without messing it up. They will tell you, that they changed it when they did not. Unfortunately, experience tells me, that if the bushing needed replaced and the trans is orginial as well as the yoke, the yoke is likely worn too.
