Can powerfull speakers blow out bondo work?
Just a dumb question, but I am curious. I'm not talking about the chicken wire / newspaper bondo type repairs, but a solid metal foundation with a "typical" 1/8" or more bondo layer properly prepared and finished. Ironically, I've seen these guy use bondo to smooth out fibrglass speaker boxes, so maybe it does hold up. Maybe it's a function of the watts in your amp too though.

re: Can powerfull speakers blow out bondo work?
I would say yes.
Amplified sound will shatter glass, break up stones and is used to clean tanks. (There is also talk of a weapon that can damage internal organs??). I would think breaking up bondo would easily be possible. |

re: Can powerfull speakers blow out bondo work?
Totally guessing here but I'd agree with scrimshaw. Even with my little dinky speakers in my '32 I can vibrate the metal in the overhead console and shake the rear view mirror so badly it blurs the entire view. With big womping speakers I would guess you could vibrate every square inch of sheet metal on the car. And once the sheet metal starts vibrating the filler work will start vibrating. The problem being that these two materials have totally different molecular make up and will thus NOT vibrate in total unison. And there lies the problem. Over time, stress cracks could develop between the two, non-similar materials and eventually the bondo could fail. The thicker the bondo...the greater the possibility of a problem in my estimation.

Also hitting the right frequency is probably just as important as decibels.

re: Can powerfull speakers blow out bondo work?
Id have to go with yes as well, but it would take some serious power. a friend of mine had 6 10 inch audiobahn sub woofers and some where around 6000 watts of amps in the back of his s-10 blazer...only god knows why a person would put an 8000 dollar stereo in an 800 dollar vehicle...but he did. It rattled loose trim and small nuts and bolts, not to mention it landed him with some ear problems, no joke. I rode in it once with the stereo going for a mile or two when i got out i felt physically ill...not sure why. check out bass races if your interested you can see some of the modifications those guys do to keep their cars from exploding.

re: Can powerfull speakers blow out bondo work?
Here's how I see it. Yes, I have to assume there are speakers and amps big enough to do damage, but it is all a moot point in my world because there is not a reason in hell that I would have such a speaker or amp.
But if you watch mythbusters they have debunked most of these myths. Brian |

But I did love the one where they were able to put out a fire using the vibrations from massive speakers and very low tones. |

re: Can powerfull speakers blow out bondo work?
i would have to say no. i've got 1800 watts going through 2 12" subs in a ported box. it's not the most powerful system in the world, but it's pretty strong and i've been using this setup or similiar setups for the past 7 or 8 years. what i have in my lincoln has been there for about 2 years and is used frequently.
i've never had problems with the bodywork that was done to my rear quarter panel, nor have i had problems in any of my cars with nuts and bolts coming loose, nor have i ever broken a window. i've heard myths of people shattering thier rear windows with systems, but i've met 2 1st place trophy holders and neither of them has had any problems like that. you would think it would do all sorts of damage, but i just don't. |

Re:
This I have some experience with. I have several cars and all have high end very powerfull audio systems. I also have been doing body work and paint for many years including building alot of fiberglass interior parts lately including consoles, door panels, and boxes for subs. there is some bondo involved but more fiberglass than anything. they (when done right) can be extremely strong and so far I have had no cracking or problems. I have recently been doing the fiberglass thinner than before because it really doesnt have to be that thick. I use partical board to start then use spandex to get the complex curves and shapes that you see, I then saturate the spandex with fiberglass resin and follow with about 3 layers of the chopped fiberglass mat. once it is dry I smooth it out with a little filler and thats about all there is to it. I can see why a person would think it is likely to crack and have troubles but look at it this way, it will be as durable as a corvette...lol I hope this helps have a good weekend.

Sounds like BAD body work to me, a lumpy cam and a zillion horsepower does not shake out bondo and that kind of power has been around a trillion years, before we had these rolling boom boxes that people are so proud of. Talk about a waste of money and little return. Anyone can make a pest out of themselves with a twist of a volume control that is a NO TALENT exercise and 2 year old could do it just as well. These loud radios are like a mess of kids with toy drum sets. Going out to work on my car now, getting real close to color, this thread is sure a waste of time ........................... and talent |

re: Can powerfull speakers blow out bondo work?
I have one of those waste of time and talent stereo's in my car and i enjoy it very much. I guess I wasted my time and talent building in speakers hiding wires and setting the head unit into my dash. sure looked nice when it was done, sounds good too.
close to color? color is for idiots who don't realize the only important thing about a car is how it runs. talk about a crappy investment and return. you must be a moron because you like something different than I do. that is of course sarcasm, but thats how your statement comes across. different people like different things, if they like it, and they put their talent, effort and money into why does that make them an idiot. At least they have the mind to do something constructive. |

Ouch Pepi! Neighborhood kids keeping you up at night with thier thumpidy thump civics? Sorry to hear that. I for one always liked to listen to my music LOUD and am not afraid to use the volume control APPROPRIATLY like on the highway. That said, I could never afford a good system when I was younger and with digital equipment making music so much clearer today, I want to incorporate a killer system into my next build. Sorry to waste your time. Guess I'm making up for not a having a drum set when I was a kid ![]() |
