Thanks, I did that, but it says it has 11 records which are shown in the "CARFAX Vehicle History Report" which costs money. I've seen people before with unlimited carfax's and offer to run the VINs for free?

Thanks,
Colin

If you do not have a current subscription it will only tell you it has records, but will not give you the specifics unless you pay.

Just remember one thing about the "CarFax", it is a VERY important one little word you see thru out it, the word "reported". The CarFax report is next to worthless. It can prove that something HAS happened to the car, but it does NOTHING to prove that something hasn't happened.

Again, think about that word "reported".

Brian hit the nail on the head with that one.
Most body shops I know of never report anything.
And of course, neither do I.

I can't agree with you more - it's just better then having no idea about the vehicle at all.

Also, an OASIS report can be good for mfr warranty repairs - this steered me away from two very nice looking low mileage 05 F350 Ford Diesels that were pending disasters. I ended up with an '06 V10 gas guzzler for less $$ instead but with no reported warranty repairs but 2 taillight bulbs.

Yep I agree with IC, there's no method of record or history that's going to give you a 100% read on a car. Certainly for 20 bucks a carfax is better than no carfax. When I was shopping around a couple of months ago I certainly found a few undisclosed major accidents and salvage titles. I probably would have found that info out anyway, but at the very least it saved me the time of going over to look at a junk car.

Actually, I think that Car Fax gets their information from insurance companies, and motor vehicle registrations. If there was no insurance claim filed, then no report. It is amazing how many people have their cars repaired at their cost, rather than have their insurance go up. I have also seen them where they list the $ amount of damage that is incorrect. That is because the original estimate was way low, and a supplement was done, showing considerable more damage.

They do provide some insight, but it is not guaranteed.
