can u down stroke chevy 350
l want to put a 262 crank which is (3.100) in a 350. what would need to be done to it. I just want something different. Thanks ...ps. it would be like 311cid

Carroll Caudle from Amarillo TX, NHRA Div. 4, 1969 U.S. Nationals C/MP Record Holder.
Carroll Caudle's '55 Chevy C/MP Record Holder had a 311 CI screamer and he made it work. In 1968, Caudle designed a 2-4 barrel tunnel ram intake using the lower part of a 1957 Chevrolet fuel-injection manifold. After the 1969 U.S. Nationals, Vic Edelbrock borrowed Caudle's manifold and took it to his facility in California where he copied the design and produced the first tunnel ram intake manifold using a new device Edelbrock called a "flow bench". Caudle built a SBC engine with 1957 283 CI (3.00 stroke) crank, 5.700" rods, Venolia 12:1 pistons in a 1962 327 Ci +.060" OS (4.060" bore) block for 311 CI. Why not build the 302 with the forged cranks that came stock or with aftermarket. cast crank is good but why not go all the way. the 302 is a proven combo and will make a ton of power. This combo cam stock in a few gm performance cars. Potential was never reached chevy's customers wanted bigger cubes so that is what they were sold. No part of the 302 was really weak or poor performing.
I have herd from several ppl the 302 will turn 9k rpm without scattering. Not sure if that is true but would love to see it. |

You can buy off the shelf 3 inch ( good quality cranks) 2.9 from callies.There is a tonne of room for a 6 inch rod.
6,000 rpm will make around 350 plus horse power potential and not require great heads except the screw in studs. roller rockers etc are standard equipment for high RPM.CR will need to be 10 ish or better |

Carroll Caudle's 311 CI engine had a 1962 327 block, casting #3782870. The 283 crank was #2725236 with 2.30" main and 2.00" rod bearings. The #3782870 blocks were originally equipped with a PowerGlide transmission. The used blocks were cured without excessive main bearing loading.
Carroll Caudle's 311 CID engine produced 600 HP. He left the line at 11,000 RPM and shifted with a BW T-10 4-speed at 8,000 RPM. ET: 11.46 His '55 Chevy had a '57 Olds rear end with 5.86:1 gears. The heads were #3991462 double hump FI heads ported and flow tested by the late Joe Mondello. The engine used a 42 lb. flywheel to prevent bogging on the line. The Vic Edelbrock prototype tunnel ram intake manifold had two AFB 4-barrel carburetors and later he used two Holley 660 CFM carburetors. NHRA Modified Production class required: Only a lap belt, stock interior, slapper bars OK, no roll cage, full bumpers, no wheel well cut-outs, no push bars, no engine set-back, stock glass, any transmission, engine and body by the same manufacturer, stock brakes, front shocks. Not following the requirements put you in GAS class. Those were the days. We removed the front shocks from a 1962 Chevrolet Impala 409/409 to get more front end lift and the NHRA officials at Temple Academy Drag Way near Temple TX moved us from Super Stock to Gas. |

one thing no one has mentioned is that there are 383's that go to 9,000 RPM, and the hard part is NOT the stroke but the valvetrain, harmonics, and oiling.
I'm you just want 7,000 RPM a stock 350 crank with 6.125" rods and some light weight pistons is all you need for the rotating assembly, and a solid flat cam with good valvesprings, rockers, and pushrods will hold up most of the valvetrain end. And you can modify a wet sump system to be adequate as well. |
