can you help with 77 Olds Cutlass Rear End ID

what Rear End is in my 77 Cutlass ? its the orginal 10 bolt with 241 gears. I want to update it0, and put a posi in & 373 gears and some aftermarket axles in it. is it a 2 or 3 series ? 8.5 ring ear ? 28 spline axles ?


wheres the best place to start with rear disc brake conversion ?

It's going to have the standard 8.5 inch ring gear and 28 spline axles.
The differential carrier (I can't remember the series off hand) will definitely need replaced with the higher series, I believe the carrier break was 3.23/3.42 so if has a 2 you will need a 3 series, if it has a 3 you will need a 4, I just don't remember which one the 2.41 gear used offhand.

OH yeah, I like the looks of that car, a kid I went to school with had a light green version of it, and I had a 2-door Caprice, we both raced them on and off the tracks where I grew up.

http://tech.oldsgmail.com/axle_ident.html has pics for ID'ing 7.5" vs 8.5" rears. On an 8.5", 2.41 gears use the 2-series carrier, while 2.73 & up use the 3-series.
