Post cant get it started

I am working on my buddies 81 elcamino. It sat for about 6 months. it has a 305 with a 2 barrel.Ever since it willl only go about 20 miles per hour, but then it died. i rebuilt the carb and it still wont start. i disconnect the fuel line because of the gas maybe being bad and spray starter fluid down the carb. it wnt even kick over. It has new spark plugs and when i ground a plug it definlety has spark. what should i do next.

Check the timing mecanism, belt/chain, sprocket. I am not sure if that elk has a timing chain or gear drive but if you have fire and fuel it sounds like a timing problem to me.
