Can't open hood on '48 Chevy Coupe

Here's the situation. Had the grill out of the '48, and to take it out I had to remove the shroud at the very front of the hood. After I put the grill back in, I closed the hood. Now the release will not unlock the latch. The cable goes through a hole in that front shroud, so I can't get at the end of it to trip the latch. I disconnected the cable back at the dash, and can get the cable to sound like it's releasing the latch by pulling on it, but it still won't release the latch. Any help or suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

No one lives forever, the trick is creating something that will.
