Just wondering if anyone else has seen this, it sounds like the EPA is at it again :drunk:

CIC attendees get lowdown on EPA refinish regs

Copied and pasted from link:

Environmental Protection Agency officials are continuing their fact-finding mission this week as they march toward new regulations aimed at cutting emissions from the refinish process in collision repair facilities.

EPA Environmental Protection Specialist Kim Teal outlined to Collision Industry Conference (CIC) attendees her agency’s process for developing the new rules impacting the refinish market. “The rule will impact everyone, no matter how much you use,” Teal told the audience at the CIC meeting Tuesday in Mandalay Bay.

Teal and her colleagues have been busy visiting shops and gathering data as they prepare to write a proposed rule by 2007. Full implementation of the rule is targeted for August 2011.

Zip,

Thanks for the heads up. This could sure change the playing field for back yard hot rodders. I'm wondering if they're intending to take every can of paint off the shelves of Wal Mart and and Tractor Supply. There's also some nasty stuff used in woodworking shops all around the country. This might be a bigger can of worms than the EPA thinks. It will also be interesting to see what position SEMA and reps of the hot rod industry take on the plan.

It may not happen, but you don't want to wait until it is too late. They did it to R-12 freon, if you didn't stock pile you are screwed. Not something you can do with paint, long term stock pile for later use.
I think one day you will see them want to end oil sales to private individuals.

Corporate Shenanigans!!

See here is the deal..the Dealer and Corporate shops charge the customer any where up to about 80-90 dollars an hour for shop time and the paint materials in the corporate world are charged out at 400 dollars a gallon with bondo and other materials charged accordingly.

The independent shop down the street charges his time considerably less and buys his materials from independent dealers for considerably less resulting in a savings to the consumer. The dealer and corporate shops do not like this at all so they are the ones pushing for some rules to put the independents out of business..

This nothing more that what we call "rent seeking" on the part of the major players in the auto repair industry..

You know they are already starting this BS program,

Try to be under 18 & buy a spray bomb or try to but more than one cold medicine package !!

They have all that stuff be hind the counter.
{Yes that over the counter remedy}

Better hope crack/meth heads dont figure out a way to use soda, beer or beef & chicken in the recipe then well have to get a prescription or rations to eat hot dogs

Gee wonder why it takes six hundred & elventy years & a hundred gazzillion dollars for the Govt. to get something done

I say its a 50 - 50 chance of happening

more Governmental intrusion thats what we need.

Republicans favor big business, agreed?
Vote in a democrat.
This has nothing to do with which party is in control. If memory serves it's the democrats who embrace the tree huggers who are ultimately behind this anyway.

If you want to talk politics - take it to the lounge off topic section.

Yeah but Rep. are for big industry and capitalism, which seems to be the problem with this country right now.

Politics aside, we should not wait till it's too late to stop this BS.

People....knock off the political differences with the Democrats vs. Republicans. That fight gets a thread nowhere but the dump.

The whole idea is to get rid of the little guy,, not the real polluters
I'm with Bill on this. Get rid of the little guy business that is cutting into the larger guys pocket. After that is done then the larger guy can up the prices to either illegally sell to the little guy or the price of getting a car done will go sky high. It's not to protect the enviroment, it's all about money.

Feedback, thus far, has helped the EPA identify a frustrated base of shop owners
It's the bigger shop owners that want the guy around the corner snuffed out. To hell with someone else trying to put food on the table, the bigger guys want it all.

This is just like the credit program that the EPA came up with to control pollution,, X amount of credits for every old car they can get crushed and the more credits the big corp's accumalate, is that much less they have to scrub their own pollution,, there by saving millions ,, same thing,, its not the little guy doing the polluting,, its the major players in the nations industries, the amount of pollution a small shop, or some guy painting his rod in his garage isn't the problem,, like the saying goes,, I didn't say it was your fault,,, I said I was going to blame you,,, its all about MONEY,, and WHO gets most of it,,

we dump thousands of gallons of chemicals into french creek every year an nothing is done about it. other companys I worked for dumped into local streams an got away with it, but D.E.P. stopped my neighbor from spray painting numbers on his demolition derby car in his yard.get used to water base & powder coat.

Car companies spend a lot of overhead to take care of environmental hazards during the building process. For instance, out where I work in detroit the Ford (truck plant I believe) folks have actually spend millions on a machine that evacuates the paint booth fumes into a special generator which is actually fueled by the fumes. THe fumes are burned and reburned until the exhaust is within code, and the resulting energy is converted into electricity to run the plant!

Same thing happened to the chrome shops 10 or 15 years ago when the EPA cracked down on the chemicals needed to chrome parts. Nowadays in many cases the result is that buying new chrome parts is cheaper than having old parts rechromed (which, admittedly, probably includes filling in all the pits with copper etc).

Just be happy they're not cracking down on the exhaust of older cars...

Yet.

I agree stand up now, or it will be too late.m

I agree but not to get all political. . . .

who has the knowledge & time & skills to fight with the ones who make it up as they go?

Do HOT RODDERS need a lobbyist in Congress to pursue a hobby?

Before you know it we will be Outlaws.

OH well back to moon shining :p

no paint

WE really do need a lobbyist, like green peace, who I personally hate. thats the good part obout USA. We already have waterbased products. If you have been around woodies, You probably already seen water based finish. I have seen water based enamel, but haven't used it Tn has emissions tests , you can't get your plates until your vehicle passes. I don't how far back it goes compared to other states, but far enough to be a real problem. Yes, we need lobbyist probably sponserd by organizations like this on- something to think on. I still have one car airconditioner using R12, but look at the cost or the cost to retrofit.Restorations won't be completely OEM. Chew on this, it's us and we will have to raise the money m
