cant start engine
I just put an engine together for my friend and i cant get it to start. i just put an xe268 cam, s/r torquere heads, performer rpm intake, and i reused his edelbrock 600 cfm carb. i know it has spark but when i crack the throttle under cranking it sprays a mist of fuel. any help would be appreciated.

Timings off, disconnect the power wire, pop the distributor cap, rotate the engine until the pointer is pointing at the number 1 plug wire. Yank the dist back out, then reset the spark timing to about 12 degrees btdc via rotating the engine, drop the dist back in, being the oil pump is already in alignment, you can drop the dist back in without bumping the engine over in most cases.

Sounds like the timing gears are not aligned properly and the piston is pushing air and fuel back through the carb. Have you checked the static compresson yet?
