im runin a system in my car and i have 3 amps. not really big amps just a 750 1200 and a 800 i believe. But when im driving at night i have my lights on and heat on and radio on my lights will dim and the power meter drops. it don't go all the way down to zero it stays in the so called normal range, but i don't like it and it makes me think mycar is going to die or drain the battery. what would be a best fix for this? new battery? bigger alternator?? i believe im running a 100 amp alternator. thx for the help!!!
Do a search under "charging problems". Suggest reading posts by DOCVETTE. He has covered this extensively in recent months. Unfortunately we lost this great guy just a short time ago. We all miss him and I would not even try to match his wit or wisdom.
Get back if you can't find anything and we'll steer you a little closer.
get a 1 PH capicitor, as long as your voltage stays around 13.5v that should do the trick.. walmart sells them still I think, but I would get a good brand, from a place like circuit city or the like.
you need to get a large capacitor and put it inline with your amps power feeds. They store energy and release it during 'bass hits' which is when your amps pull the most power. Crutchfields catalogue is a good place to find em if I remember correctly.
I just did the calculation to find the amperage, and unless I'm doing somthing wrong.. 2750 watts is 203 amps.. 233 amps when you figure it takes about 30 amps to run a vehicle w/ the headlights.. the charge light should be flashing on each bass hit, I think.. ither way, charging system is way under powered.
What does a guy need 2750 watts of stereo amplification for?
There isn't ANYTHING I'd want to listen to that loud. ain:
You are gonna hurt yer ears.
Bigger alternator, and alot of the guys out here run a second battery ....on an isolator..lets em play that racket when they are parked, then be able to start the car when the cops show up.
I hear/see those cars go by with the BOOMBA BOOMBA music going full blast,
and the driver seems to be totally oblivious to the noise around him.
Like Mike there is nothing I´d want to listen to that loud.
There are alternators with ridiculous outputs to solve that problem, but they´ll probably fry the stock wiring as well. High output alternators.
I had a 70 GMC with a hot 400 SBC and had a custom bumper sticker made "ALL ZOOM NO BOOM ". I would rather spend my money on more HP than BOOM power any day.
while I agree with all of you ...
he was asking about his alternator , not our opinions on the Db's of his tunage.
A 1 farad Capacitor is made to do exactly what he wants. power his amps. 203 amps will only be drawn at 100% of the volume output. that being said - 2350 watts is not a reality , I don't care WHAT the amps themselves may say. :nono: I've got a 50 watt marshall half-stack that would make you deaf if you put it in a cars enclosed space. with the volume on 3 it can keep up with a drum set. I put it up against ANY car amp out there Db for Db. and it's only "50" watts.
I , myself have had 26 speakers , 3 amps , an Eq and a crossover in a 72 skylark that I had.
I now prefer to listen to the exhaust/engine / emergency vehicles/ road noise when I drive ......
maybe I'm gettin old.
maybe not , but as far as it goes..... get a Capacitor - problem solved
and trust me im all about the engin and everything also. i turn the system down at stop lights and everything.. im polite about it.. i hate ppl that are not.. but im runin a 1991 5.0 mustang right now and the horsepower is enough for me ... at this point i just upgraded to the 5.0 from a 4banger 1988 mustang.. so im good. i just want it all i guess hehe.. speed and music.
Yes, 2750 watts is 203 amps at 13.5 volts. I doubt your alternator can output that, even at 3,000 RPM. The best thing I can suggest is to follow others advice and stick in a very large capacitor.
...You could always install a Honda emergency generator in you trunk... :mwink:

2750 watts may be 203 amps at 13.5 volts..... but those amps will NEVER put out 2750 watts.
Car amps are NOT rated at RMS :nono:
a 1000 "watt" amp is rated 1000 watts at 2 ohms ( which is an unsafe - amp blowing load on most amps )which means 500 watts @ 4 ohms and 250 watts @ 8 ohms...... and even then - that would be at Maximum input ( stereo head unit on 10 ), which would be distorted as all get out.
Caps are designed and marketed to do exactly what he's lookin to do.... help his alty-nator
I like the idea of a generator in the trunk , though......

That makes a little more sense... I was having a hard time imagining 203 amps worth of sound! :drunk:
