car collection being auctioned off

This fellow in Utah who apparently embezzled millions from investors had all of his stuff seized and it turns out he has a huge collection of cars ranging from Euro sports cars to a General Lee replica, check out what's up for auction. http://www.salesandauction.com/jan710.htm I guess the US Marshals will use the proceeds to pay back some of the money he owes.

Quite a collection he's got there. No common theme, that's for sure. Did you notice those two Thunderbirds with the 51 or 51 Ford custom front ends? I've long thought that conversion creates the goofiest combination that automobile restyling could come up with -- retro-styling the front and rear ends (quite recognizably) and yet leaving the equally recognizable contemporary mid-section. Duh!!
Customization is one thing - stupidification is another!!! But then, that's just my opinion.

I guess the rarest one would be the '48 Mercury Desoto

Interesting to say the least. I still have lots of contacts in the area and will have a few take some preview looks to see if it would be worth my time to fly out for the auction. Whoever provided the words with the pics is not much into cars. The yellow Merc "Sedan" and the Merc Desoto look much alike. Both are convertible coupes and may be the same car mislabeled. The green and black 35 Ford Pickup is also mislabeled as a 35 Ford Panel. If the 3,XXX miles is correct, I will try to find enough bills to bring it home.

Salt Lake in Jan, Brrrrrrrrr!!!!!

It is a strange collection when it's it all together like that, and the motorcycles that he has are equally strange to me but, to each his own. I might try to go down and see them in person if things work out right.

And Salt Lake is usually coldest in January, but we just had a cold spell two weeks ago where it never got out of the 20s (that was the high for the day!) so I'm hoping that global warming thing comes back and keeps us in the 30s and 40s for the rest of winter.

Most of that ?stuff? looks overpriced to me and there is no way that he could have kept up the proper maintenance on all those rides so some/most of them probably have "major" issues - - - - it will be interesting to see if they have everything running and driveable come "Auction Time" - - - I seriously doubt it

That is a very sloppy presentation considering some of the choice machines that are there

For some reason it just doesn't add but, hell, I'm an old suspicious phart

A friend of mine is going to a preview session and check out a couple of the vehicles I am interested in. He will send me some detailed pics and his thoughts on them. Just what I need is another vehicle or two, but never have been able to pass up a great deal. But auctions can be funny things and I am not sure I want to go through the airline hassle to try to find a great deal.

It appears that the guy has a thing for replicas. I wonder if he was planning to sells these fakes as real cars by washing the titles in other states? Granted the Diablo wouldn't pass the muster, but the others possibly could with little effort.

The fact that they have been identified clearly on-line as replicas by whoever is liquidating the collection pretty much rules that out, dontcha think??
Why do we assume the worst from people? Have a little faith (and then call me naive when they try some skullduggery!!!!) in humankind.

Errr, what? Okay, you're naive.

What part of: "This fellow in Utah who apparently embezzled millions from investors had all of his stuff seized..." did you miss?

there fiberglass, marked as replica's and the VIN's appear to be assigned Vins. there is no way you could pass them as originals and even if someone tried, the U.S Marshalls are tied to the auction and will have buyer information..

I doubt he was going to try selling them as the real deal. those old replica 'kit cars' while being a decent representation of the real thing, can easilly be spotted as a fake because most were built on later model chassis.

JGK95: I don't want to get into a p***ing match with ya, but I didn't miss any of it. Actually, I'm quite a good reader. What you are forgetting is that the crook is not liquidating his collection....someone else, court-appointed, is doing so.

Have a good one.
