Car has mental problem?

Has anyone experienced this? 1998 Lumina--car starts every time but shuts down after about 2 seconds--is not flooding--is not starving--acts as though the car has been shut off--otherwise when it stays started it runs like new. I have been a shade-tree mechanic for 40 years, has me stumped--computer analysis of no use.. Suggestions anyone?

Sounds like a PassLock problem to me..... Is the "Theft" lamp flashing when the car starts and dies? Would need a bi directional scanner to monitor the passlock module for intermittant loss of signal. You could try a passlock relearn.... Disconnect the battery for a bit, then reconnect it. Trurn the key to "on", and leave it for minimum 15 minutes. after this time, turn key off, and then try to start the car. Should fire right up.

X2 with SBCFriek. Look for the flashing theft lamp or security lamp which ever you have.
If it is a passlock system the lockcylinder and tumblers could also be the problem.
Try SBC s suggestion. It may clear it up.

An alarm shop can sell you a box to skip over the gm coded keys if that turns out to be the problem.

Does the fuel pressure fall when the engine shuts off. You may need to hook up a guage and see if the fuel pressure fails as it stalls out. May be the fuel pump or fuel pump relay. They are common to work for a second then crap out when amperage goes up.
