I have an 88 Mazda Rx7. Put a Chev 355 in it. Anyways, Lately I've been having a lot of problems with what seems to possibly be my carberator. It's a Holly 600 Vacume Secondary's. It's only been used mabye 3000kms 2000miles. Anyways, I've never been able to get the carberator working to my satisfaction, It would either idle real ****ty, and make the engine rmps flutter a lot (but make lots of power). OR... It would idle nice and smooth, and run well... But make no power whatsoever. Right now, it's running ****ty and making no power. If I hammer it off the line, I'll just backfire through the carb, and the car will stall. ALso, it seems like I'm just bogging when the 4barrels open, as I make just as much power at 1/2 throttle as I do wide open. It just get's louder when wide open. On another note, every time I start the car, I have to pump the gas 2 or 3 times or it will just crank and crank (not getting fuel). My friend has a holly 650 on his very similar motor, and he can leave his car for a week and just turn the key and it will sit and idle. Anyways, I'm pretty pissed off with carbs. Can someone gimmie some pointers?.
If the backfire was due to an intake valve not seating properly or something, wouldn't it do it anytime I floored it?. Thanks. Rex. |

Or maybe you have crossed up the spark plug wires...

Hey Guys. It's got an MSD distributor and cap, not HEI... And an ACCELL supercoil for a coil... lol. 8.8mm Accell wires. The ignition system is all pretty new.. shouldn't be anyproblems there, checked the firing order and whatnot... all seems fine. The cam timing is 3 degrees advanced, and the ignition timing is 30 degrees advanced. It also has vacume advance. The choke is open... however, I didn't really check for vacume leaks.. isn't there an easier way to check then soap and water though?... I forget it though...
. Any takers?.

Hey RX7.
I just had my Holley rebuilt and there was a bunch of thread lock or something all balled up around the needle valves. He rebuilt it(40 bucks) and it runs like new. HG |

Is your ignition timing set at 30 (!), or is that 30 degrees of total timing???

OK. New news... I actually went to time the car myself. And I discovered that it had the wrong timing tab on it... So really I dont know what it was or is timmed to... I'm gona have to get a new tab tommorow or something. I got the Carb setup a lot better now aswell, only problem is that the four barrels arn't even opening at all though. It's a 600 Holly Vacume, ELec Choke. The engine should have more then enough vacume to open them properly. I'm not sure what the reason is to this... Any takers?.

You really need to read the book on the carb. I found myself tring to tune it like a holly and it is backwards. also you really need to get a vaccum gave at the part store and check the vaccum on the motor. I fought this same problem with my car and it got expensive and then the problem was revealed to me. Read in the manual about what kind of idle springs to use with your specific type of cam. this is where it gets fun and you will need a vaccum gage. they make different idle springs according to the amount of vaccum that the cam creates. I went with a .509 lift with a 292 durration and a 108 centerline and this cam has a overlap of 76 deg. this cam doesn't create much vaccum and I had switch out spring there a 5 sets of springs that you need to buy and just play with different config. this is fun according to how radical the cam is. <img src="graemlins/evil.gif" border="0" alt="[evil]" />

If you were trying to get the secondaries to open while parked it wont happen anyway. The secondaries open w/ vaccum from the transmission and sence a load. I know this only because I was going through the same thing. Solution: Get a new carb. Bite the bullet and just do it man. hahaha
