Thumbs down Car Shows

What is up with the car shows here in Ohio? I have a buddy who built his beetle with a 289 in front and enters shows all the time and never gets any awards. He also has a T that is awesome. Both he rebuilt himself both have homemade parts and paint jobs. All the while the jerks who buy there cars finished are winning all the trophys? what is there to do about this. Is there any car shows for people who actually work there *** off for there art?

ahh yes you have stumbled upon a topic which shall be debated as long as there are cars.
unfortunatly there are no good answers the problem is not just in ohio its everywhere if you build a car to win trophys you are getting into a world of politics and personal tastes. dont take it personally, show the car with pride and i'm sure you will be complimented on your hard work by the people who see it, get together with other people who have done it themselves if your going to larger organized shows with all different classes its hard to get recognized but if you go to local weekly cruises you'll make out better.
remember drive them to enjoy them don't sweat it if some others don't give you the time of day <img src="graemlins/sweat.gif" border="0" alt="[sweat]" />

Welcome to the real world. It's not what you know but who you know. Build car for your own satisfaction and you will be far ahead. Ed Roth of Rat Fink, Outlaw, Beatnik Bandit, Mysterion, etc., fame who was one of the most brilliant auto artists in history never won a trophy. He entered the Oakland Roadster Show early in his career (Outlaw?) and was disqualified because he didn't have lock washers on the bolts in his suspension. Translation: someone else was pre-ordained to win the show. He never entered another show to be judged, just to give the spectators the priveledge of seeing his creations in person.

My car (see photo at left) is politically incorrect with the street rod in-crowd. I have been asked to move my car from the front row (got there early!) to the back row at a 'Gasser Gathering' at a nostalgia drags at Fomosa drag strip to make room for more swoopy, pastel painted, in the weeds, billet everything, BB Chevy, high profile Willys. I just moved down to the general rod show area and parked next to my son's '36 Pontiac and had a great time! My satisfaction comes when an old-timer stops and looks at my car and I can see in his eyes that he is reminded of those grand old days of the gasser wars which my car is intended to honor. THAT is better than any front row or trophy I could ever get!

I couldn't agree with you guys more. We actually had some pretty heated debates on this back around March or May of this year. It's the same thing here in Jersey. I never worry about winning cause 1. I don't belong to a club (big no no), 2. My car doesn't quite fit in any category, 3. She still needs work. So basically I just go to get a good parking spot and enjoy some nice cars, and it's a nice day out with my daughters.

Years ago, I entered my '31 Chevy 2 door sedan and won large, very large trophies. But raising three kids, I had no room to put the trophies so up in the attic they went. I moved many times thru-out the years and I ended up throwing all of them away. Now, I don't enter any shows because 1. they charge you to show your car 2. what will I do with another trophy? 3. they're political. Now I just build and drive for my own pleasure. I've been asked to show my car(s) in local shows without actually vying for a trophy because they know that I refuse to pay an entrance fee. Think about it, they charge you to show your car so they could draw the crowds and make more money However, I don't have a problem donating money for a good cause. :p

Just go for the fun of it. Some of those bought rods have quite a few bucks wrapped up in them and are almost guaranteed to win wherever you go. It's more fun just to sit and shoot the bull with other rodders. You get to know quite a few people. Also, spectators are the ones that count. The typical person that likes the everyday rod and not the high dollar, I paid for everyone to do it for me rod. They are the ones that comment and make it worth while. BTW, howdy from Ohio also.

AHHHHHH, this one again. Last Sunday, I went to a cruise in around the town square in Shelby, NC. It was great. No fee's, no judges, no bullsheet. All you did was show up, park your can and walk around and bench race. They did do a 50/50 for a local charity, so someone got a quick $30. It was the best show I have been to in a while. Like many others here, I wore colors of a club, but they turned brown from all the crap. I would wear the colors of this place because it is a blast!
And while I have the floor, I'll open a similar can of worms. At a top 25 car show, should a PT cruiser get an award, or a '02 Dodge truck? The argument is that they just spent more than you have in your entire car, why shouldn't they? But like your bud with the V-8 bug, it was all sweat equity. The only show I enter is the Good Guys in Charlotte, because it is such a diversified field. For me, it's all about getting there. Remeber the commercial, "Dogs Love Trucks!" Madd Dawg here!
