Car Shows, My Car, & Modified Vs. Stock Class.
I am swapping out the stock intake and carburetor for a Camaro Crossfire intake and a pair of older Rochester MonoJet carburetors, only until I can get the wiring harness and all associated components necessary to hook up the dual Rochester model 400 TBI units.
I have been told by tech inspectors at a couple shows that I could enter under the stock classification with the paint color of the car, I am planning on repainting the car in the future (who knows when) and can use the similar shade of Chevrolet's "Bright Yellow" for 1981, but I would rather have the more bright and bold custom mixed yellow I am using on the car now.
They also informed me that even though I have a TH-700R4 (which was never available in 1981 or the Malibu model car for it's generation), that if I hadn't put it on the show pre-registration application they would have never looked for it or counted it towards the usual three modification or less Stock class.
I am using a set of wheels that were only available on Chevrolet Camaro in 1987 and were then discontinued. They are still Chevrolet Rally wheels, and still technically count toward the three and Modified rule, but most third generation Camaro owners who attend shows opted to use the larger 16 inch, or aftermarket wheels to suit their own taste.
I am thinking of having the car "teched" for a couple of the larger shows I attend but making it a habit to check the "modified" box for the rest of them.
I have been put into classes in different car shows that include model year cars from 1973 through 2005, when the next row or two over they seperate similar make and model cars three times in the 1960's alone, just because I chose to enter in the stock class.
Everything I am using to make the changes on my car are options on different year and model Chevrolets, but still qualify as a modofication.
The one thing I cannot argue as non original is the interior color (Light Gray), as it was never available in the 6th generation Malibu model.
The front air-dam, and the trunk mounted spoiler were available additions for the Malibu through a dealer program that sent the 1980 model year Malibu's to Choo-Choo Customs in Tennessee and given a model name of M80.
Some of the things used on the M80 were also included in the 1980 and later years of the Elcamino SS.
So with the paint color (1), the intake manifold and air cleaners (2), if they don't mention the wheels (3), the interior color (4), the overdrive transmission (5), or the air-dam and spoiler (6), should I just either enter modified or let them tech me?
First thing I would do is....weld up 2 of those doors......... :D .........Kidding..
Even though, as Red Forman would say..."They are genuine GM parts", it does not keep it stock. How stock it is depends on what the various judges say......and what they know. Most of the car shows I go to, the judges are just any old "Joe Blow" off the street, who know as little or less than I do.
I know what you mean about the know-it-all-but-really-know-nothing-and-show-their-ignorance-by-opening-their-mouth car show judges.
Most of the shows I enter into are participant judged, and even the better percentage of them know less than they show.
The fact some other show cars are shown alongside a four door sedan REALLY gets some of the other owners a bit hot around the collar, and really shows what little sportsmanship they have, believe me, my kids have noticed this.
Just because these people are older, or look like adults, doesn't mean they have grown up, because most of them certainly don't act like it. I have won a couple second places, and a couple third and fourth places, but have mostly attended for the "also-ran" and had fun doing it.
I had a post on the board a long time ago about not winning trophies, I could care less now, I go for the dash plaque and good time, and it's much cheaper than most other hobbies I have gotten myself into. I have more money invested into each of two of my other hobbies than I do into the Malibu total.
Why did you start this poll? You admit the car is not stock and you have many SS parts on a four door. To my knowledge the only SS four doors were the late 90's Impalas. Why don't you just forget the whole show car scene and enjoy your car. The judged car shows are all crap anyway. Your car doesn't mean a thing, it's who you know. The participant voting shows in my area are won by the same people because they all get together and vote for each other. If a bunch of ricers come in with stock cars except for big tires and a wing, they take all the trophies by pooling their votes. They can do this because there are no separate classes. I don't waste my time going to these things. I attend non judged, events for charity and have a good time. Besides, no matter what, some guy can enter a Boyd or Chip mobile that is way beyond my financial and skill resources any day.

According to the shows rules of 3 mods and still stock, it technically is still that way with paint, wheels, and possibly interior if they get picky. I am even running the original 267 with 165,000 miles on it, the only changes to it are currently the camshaft, and fuel pump.
Like all the cookie cutter magazines say:
"Run what you brung", and "dare to be different".
I know I don't have as desireable a car as a 2-door, or an antique, or even a classic muscle car.
The air-dam and spoiler are factory originals found on a Malibu M80 as there was never a 6th generation SS.
I cannot fully expect to be excited about the newer generation SS designation on the cars rolling off the line in the past 7 years.
A four door econobox with nothing that will set me back in the seat and bring a smile to my face doesn't deserve the SS badges like the first run of the newest generation of Monte Carlo (they finally wised up and added a supercharger with a measly 40 horsepower addition to the base model), same thing with the latest generation Impala (40 HP over LS model, but they added over 150 pounds with the modifications to the drivetrain and exhaust.
There aren't very many ricers in this area that waste their time showing their cars with the muscle car crowd because they cannot compete against a majority.
Mainly because I'm running a different car, the judges aren't sure at all about the specifics for the particular year. The color was actually an option for the entire Chevrolet lineup for 1981, with an RPO code stating [NON-RECOMMENDED PAINT COLOR].
Only one member here on Hotrodders was able to help me determine what the wheels were from before I bought them.
If I were you, I wouldnt get my panties in a bunch over it, the idea is to make it the way YOU like it. Your car will most likely never be a big hit with the judges. As far as stock class goes , I dont think it would be much of a contender unless there werent many to compete against. Same with the modified class. as much as you may like the car, most judges arent gonna get excited over a 4 ddor g-body, with a 267...or any engine for that matter..again, unless there just werent many others that showed up....or possibly , your attention to detail, & quality of the build showed over everyone else.
Its kinda like mine. Ive got a 75 GMC C-15 shortbed stepside pickup, lowered ,454, lotsa nice stuff....the only way mine gets any awards is if the show has a class for modified trucks.
If you want a car to win shows & please judges, you need to get a 2 door, & dont tell anyone its a 267. If you really like the car, thats cool, but dont expect to get local car show , or any judges to get excited.
I take mine to shows all the time, never expecting to win a thing, & usually dont, but I have fun hangin out with friends & lookin at other peoples junk. John

I guess I'm still lost on this one. The car is stock or it's modified. You can't have it both ways. As far as 3 mods don't count, I guess you could have a chop top, full tubbed rear and a blown big block and it's still stock? It's kinda like being half pregnant, there's no such thing, you'r either it or you'r not.

The modifications the shows I enter into call for examples including non-stock wheels, custom paint, obviously non stock engines like something that never had anything more than a V-6 now sporting a V-8. Obvious things that everyone accepts as never being offered in the particular make/model.
Common sense would tell anyone that a chopped top, a blown anything, and tubbed rear, is nothing but a major modification, NONE of which came from the factory on ANY manufacturers' vehicle, I am talking here about stuff that actually came from the factory, that could have possibly been an offering on a car that it didn't originally come as an option on.
When I had the car appraised two years ago the only things the appraiser stated as non stock were paint and wheels, everything else is exactly the same as back then only I have switched to a different set of wheels and added the stripes.
Same thing as a COPO, or anything that rolled out of the service entrance at theYenko, Berger, Nickey, Baldwin-Motion, or any other dealer that offered a modified vehicle from the dealer with a warranty using stock and modified stock parts.
Now I am not really even close to having a problem with anyone's point of view of my car, it's an opinion and everyone is entitled to theirs, I don't expect anyone to like my car for what it is or what I've done to it. I do.
Yes I realize it's not even a desireable model, and that a sedan is less desireable than a coupe, but I show it because it is realistically unique, hardly anyone shows ANY four door from 1960 on. Be different.
And as far as opinions go, here's mine, I would like to see someone actually put a Ford engine in a three window coupe, or a T-bucket.
