car starts... then dies
got a tricky problem... a few months back i decided to put on headers on my 1990 camaro.... it all went down hill from there. i got them in, breaking a few things along the way after deciding to lift the engine and make it easier. it turned out i broke the fan switch by letting the old exhaust manifold fall on it.my buddy heard from some guy that moving the coolant temp sensor into the air cleaner would add horsepower... as i dont see how that works, i decided to go along with it, not thinking much of it. i have an electric fan, which turned out to be a horrible mistake. while running for parts for my boss one day, my fan neglected to turn on, and i couldn't figure out why. as it was taking long to find this parts place, i let it go so i could get back to the shop. I overheated the engine, and on the way back, my fusible links melted in the parking lot of the shop (just my luck) from the headers. from there, i replaced the fusible links, and the car would start, then die again. thinking the coil was the problem, i replaced the coil since it had not been replaced for 250,000 miles. nope, wrong again. it started, then died. i have a feeling that i replaced some wires in the wrong way. can anyone describe the wiring diagram down to the fusible links going to the starter on a 1990 camaro's lo3 tbi setup? it would greatly help. or, if you have any other ideas that could be the problem, shoot em at me. thanks

check all the fuses. if you have a primary fuel pump and a primer fuel pump, the fuse for the primary may have burned out, so you start the car on the primer pump, but once started, it shuts off and the primary dosen't kick on, the car stalls. you could have installed some EFI wires on wrong to do the same thing.

Doc here,
Sounds like you lost the secondary Ignition side of the coil power.. Check the Power wire going to the BATT side of the HEI for 12 volts static (Key on) if missing look for a fuse marked IGN or coil AND ALL fuses under 15 amps for blown condition (It may not be marked "Coil" but share a fuse with something else..why it is important to check them all with a meter..) ![]() You may have damaged the contacts on the ignition switch too from the massive short through the fuse link..Check that by measuring the switched B+ buss on the fuse panel..if it comes on with the key , It's alright. To do a quick test, just run a jumper from the battery to the BATT side of the HEI and fire it up..If it cranks and runs..back track the secondary ignition wire/circuit..If not: Check the induction/fuel delivery system for inop conditions. ![]() ![]() Doc
