Question Car Stereo Help

Hey Y'all

I Have a Sony CDX -L350 Cd player in my truck .
all of a sudden the backgroung light in the display area went out.
Everything is working just fine except I cant read the display unless I catch the light just right.
Is there a Bulb or something I can do to make it work again?

Thanks
Rob

How old is the stereo? The backlights on alot of aftermarket stereos will quit after a few years. But then there isn't a whole lot you can do to fix it.

I don't think it would be a detachable face problem since every stereo nowadays has a face that comes off. Since almost every stereo has a face that comes off.
Only way to fix it that I know of is to send it somewhere for service, like back to sony, or if you bought an extended warranty with it somewhere like bestbuy. I know best buy will take care of it if its still under their warranty.
But other than that, you may just have to replace the whole deck, which isn't hard, just that you have to buy a new one.
Just another way for companies to steal you money little by little.

Hardly worth sending away these days.....just like everything else, they are meant to be replaced every few years......

If you are getting a new one....MP3/WMP are the way to go...............also, satelite radip ready. But, I am not ready to pay for radio yet.

Doc here,

On most of those, They use a series of L.E.D.'s to backlight them to illuminate the face plate when like the clock is on and the radio off...Or the Radio/CD on at night..Don't know if Sony is one of them..

Anyway, If they are all out , I 'd look for something other than LED's dead..like bad/Dirty finger connections at the faceplate to radio connection, Or on some , They have an Auto Dim function that uses an IR diode at the face plate to detect ambient light..When it See's bright ambient light, it dims the back lighting, until the lighting surrounding it, becomes less, then brings it back up..

You Could have a Dash light from another source turning it off by shining on it, so check for that..Some even have the option of Off/On back light in the menu..If yours is that way, you might check that.

Other than those few simple checks, and cleaning the faceplate and Radio pins off, unless you fancy working with an eyeloop, and are good at small component troubleshooting and repair, I'd go buy another face plate.

Doc

Just to add this to what poncho said, If you have to go get a new one, dont buy a cheaper brand. Make sure it is a good brand. And just because it looks cool doesn't mean its a good cd player. From when I was working at bestbuy, you wouldn't beleive how many of those cheap brands that looked cool came back with problems and ticked off owners.
But definitly try what doc said, but if you are gonna try and find a new faceplate, FYI they are usually about the same price as buying a whole new cdplayer.

It's been a while, but I used a company in the past based in Raleigh NC for my stereo repairs. Fast turn around and great prices. They were an authorized repair center for most brands.

Downtown Radio Service
Raleigh, NC.

Maybe do a 1-800 search?

actually, sony likes to use tiny 12v bulbs instead of leds to backlight their faceplates. sony is also very notorious for those lights to burn out, however i've never come across one where all the lights burned out simultaneously. there are probably 4 little bulbs at most on the faceplate's mainboard. radioshack carries them too and would take no more than 30 min to replace them all. save yourself the $80 in service charge, invest in a soldering iron and tweezers and go buy yourself some $3 12v mini bulbs from radioshack!

I hate elec, but how is the radio hooked up, it it cut and spliced? thair should be a (orng)wire i belive, that you have to hook up to the dash lights,it is a dimmer,i would run a dvom on the dimmer wire first to check volts at the radio or i would agree with what doc said.

Thumbs up

Well isn't that speacial...

OK so the orange & red are powered together .

Everything was working just fine except for the background lighting

So being as anal as I am {BE NICE}

I figured what do I have to loose so I got out the Jewelers screwdrivers and removed the 4 screws on the back of the detachable face then after a few minuets of poking @ it I figured how to POP apart the 2 pieces

Very much like the face plate ring or beauty ring that goes around the mounting .

I got it apart and there is a chip in there plus a whole lot of stuff & YES A LED SCREEN!

DAMN!

So I put it all back together & put it back in the dash turn it on nothing..wiggle...nothin... and badda bing badda boom it lights up !!!!!

I felt like Fonzi on the Jute Box

I turned it off & on & it still is working

Well all I can figure is :it protesting going from a Chevy to a Ford seeing that I Rob ed it out of my poor old Suburban

So
Rob here!
when the lights go out in your car stereo blow on your fist and smack where I indicated in the photos& send me $50.

Doc you think your confused??
Pic s 1 ~5
