The cable that is connected to the throtle is the kickdown cable. When you punch it when your cruising, the throttle will pull on that and cause the tranny to kick down a gear. It is possible that you could have hooked up your linkage wrong. I did that once, so i tried to start it in reverse instead of park. The nuetral safety swith wouldnt let me start it. So check that first. Also, it doesnt even look like a switch. On a ford it looks like sorta a mix between a crescent and a half circle, it has two wires on it that goes to the engine compartment. Hope i could help a little even though i have a ford.
