DAVE---- Definitly check for vacume leak!
Do you know about the trick useing a can of carb spray? Have you replaced the fuel filter? Have you checked fuel pump pressure?

Maybe your idle speed is a little low, itl idle fine until you place it in drive, then the transmission pulls the engine down a little. A vacuum leak would effect idle in park/nuetral from what ive seen. I have seen cases where a sticking throttle has caused this problem, it will stick just enough to keep the idle up, then while driving, it will slip a little and there goes your idle, the throttle lever falls back on the under adjusted screw. Make sure your entire throttle assemly is clean and properly lubed. Also make sure the pedal travel is smooth ,shouldnt bind up or have any "rough spots".

Just a thought, does your quad have an idle stop selenoid? A/C? IF so, it should energize with IGN. on. by the way, dont lean that carb up too much, idle mixture is most likely not the problem. Need a few more details. Year?
