carb gasket deformed

Have an Edelbrock 1405 carb, Perf Prod spreadbore intake with a square bore adapter with upper and lower gaskets. When I removed the carb and adapter I saw this. The upper gasket looks fine. I don't think it came apart when I removed the adapter but I can't swear to it. There's no evidence on the adapter or anywhere else. Assuming it didn't come apart when I removed the adapter- have you seen anything like this before or any ideas what happened?

Alway double check the gaskets. The slightest flaw can cause a vacuum leak. I had 2 brand new thick gaskets and I could see light between the gasket and manifold. I had the engine high enough where I could see it.

There is nothing wrong in your picture other than the gasket should have been trimmed to fit the manifold opening without overhanging the plenum opening, or a different gasket with the correct size opening used. The pieces of gasket that are missing broke off because they were hanging in the breeze.

You used a a squarebore bottom gasket against the spreadbore intake. If you do this again, just trim the gasket so there's no overhang.
