Carb help please (VW related)

Well, I am back here with another VW question in hopes someone can shed some light on my current problem... If you are VW familiar or just know a lot about carbs please see if you can help....

I need some help getting my carbs set up and this is what I know:
Displacement: 1835cc
Distributor: 009 Bosch w/ points
Fuel Pump: Stock mechanical (est. 3-5psi)
Carbs: Dual Weber 34ICTs (unknown jet sizes)

This is what I was told by the previous owner (unsure of accuracy):
Cam: Engle 110
Heads: Stock dual port
Compression Ratio: 8:1

Now, I have to assume if you made it this far into my post you have some basic VW knowledge, so here's the nitty-gritty:
I can get her to start, but the idle is really rough. I took it out for a test-run on Sunday and it pops a lot through the carbs. I thought this might be due to timing, so I re-checked timing to 32* BTDC @ 3000RPM. It also feels like it is working really hard to make power. When I hit 3000RPM it feels/sounds like I'm at 5000RPM, but there is NO power....?

I have tried to get the carbs in sync, but I think I am doing something wrong. I get the car started and put my flow guage on carb #1 and get it to a steady spot and then I move the synchronizer to the second carb and try to get it to match with carb only adjustments. This is not working well. I was told there is a balance tube that runs between the two manifolds, but my intakes do not have this tube or fittings to attach one to.

I don't want to get to involved with this first post, so please request any info I did not supply that you think will help.

I really would like to just get some good info on how to get to a starting point where I can start figuring out exactly which jets to use...

I hope someone can help....

Thanks in advance!

engine problems

with poping through the carb. i might try checking the valve adjustment. this the easiest to do first. you really dont know if the timing of the cam is correct. one thing about vw engine is you can over cam them. they like the stock cam best for street use.there is a web sight for gene burg vw .. you might try different spelling on gene burg.be sure that the valve adjustment is right.
