Thumbs up carb and timing specs

I have a 83 chevy k-10 with a 350 and a Q-jet carb.Im trying to figure out the timing specs, fast idle specs and idle specs.I tried to use the specs in a haynes which called for 1600 rpm at fast idle,700 at idle and 4 degrees BTDC and now its running like crap.

I'm assuming you have a timing light since you know it's at 4BTDC. Start advancing the timing 2 or 3 degrees at a time and see how she runs each time you advance her. If she starts to ping under load back her off till pinging stops. Have you put the timing light on her while increasing rpm's to make sure your distributor is advancing properly?
